As Black History Month draws to a close we highlight important articles on Black/African-American health published in Psychosomatic Medicine – historical papers & new contributions. All are free to read this month.
Delve into them with us! 🧵

1973: The journal published an article on BP in Black and White Detroiters. It may show its age but was prescient in examining neighborhood qualities, anger coping, & personal qualities associated w/discrimination as they related to each other & BP. https://buff.ly/3xE8rr8

See, for example, this article from 2020 by Thayer et al. in Annals of Behavioral Medicine "Angry in America: Psychophysiological Responses to Unfair Treatment" https://buff.ly/3SkDi5s

In 2021, Psychosomatic Medicine published this article reporting that coping with anger among Black adults was associated with higher epigenetic age (GrimAge, a marker of physiological aging) relative to chronological age. https://buff.ly/3kdlEnN

25 years ago: This article on blood pressure in a small Black community in rural US South. Written by an anthropologist, the paper focuses on “cultural expectations and understandings” varying by gender. John Henryism was associated with higher BP for men only. https://buff.ly/3XReCmb

And in 2022, the journal published this article reporting that John Henryism was associated with poorer cognitive function (but not decline) in older Black adults, even after adjusting for vascular risk factors.

Looking forward, evaluations of distinct strengths in Black/African-American communities and protective personal qualities like life satisfaction as they relate to health will be important in understanding Black/African-American health…

… as will understanding the Black experience and its implications for health across the globe. https://buff.ly/41eYkX8
