Since taking on the role of project manager for One Vision Productions Music for Change program, I’ve been touched profoundly by witnessing first hand the inspiring work their mentors do in empowering young indigenous people who are at risk of dropping out of the education system. One such inspiring individual is this wonderful heart felt talented star Jacob, aka JK47. He speaks from his heart about resilience and overcoming struggles; his sincerity, passion, charisma, artistry and talent are so engaging he brightens any room he walks into. A true star. He’s also just released his new album, ‘Revision for Regrowth’ - it’s absolutely brilliant - the poetry, the arrangements, the performance and the production- all first rate - be sure to check it out.

My Pa used to talk to me in rhyming slang. You know like, “pass me the dead horse would you Drew”, when he wanted the red sauce. And when he wanted a tall bottle of Melbourne Bitter, he’s say, “Grab me an Aristotle from the fridge would you Drew” - I knew what he wanted, an Aristotle = a bottle, but I’d play out a game with him. “What’s an Aristotle Pa?” “He was a philosopher Drew”. “What’s a philosopher Pa?” To which he’d respond, “He’s a guy who likes to drink a lot of beer. Now grab me an Aristotle from the fridge Drew” and I’d grab him a tall bottle of Beer and he was a happy camper. Today at 1pm I’m playing in Bangalow - lots of lovely beers to choose from - come grab yourself an Aristotle or two and listen to some tunes.

Here’s a little film clip to my ‘Butterfly’ song from the Sunshine Avenue album. I recently saw the raw footage of this on one of my best friend’s feed. It is his daughter performing the ‘Wednesday Dance’ - I didn’t know that at the time, I just thought that the freedom in her spirit was so inspiring and asked if I could use it. It makes me happy to see the next generation enjoying music. Often at gigs I saw the little ones dancing and bopping away to the beat with complete abandonment, way before the adults get the courage to take to the dance floor. They are so uncontrived . It’s wonderful. I hope you enjoy.
Butterfly 'Butterfly' written and performed by Andy Jans-Brown & Coz*Mic.

Anyway I hope you enjoy 😊 with ❤️ Andy

Vinyl of the day ‘Weirder & Weirder’
Love of sunsets
Here is yet another pic of my head smiling this side of a sunset. I love these shifts in light; dusk and dawn, full as they are with a vivid celebration of orange , peach, pink and red, mauve , pinky blue, violet hues and Vincent like puffs of silver and gold fluffy like fairy floss floating in the sky. And I love this shifts from day to night because they fill me with a sense of awe and wonder , to be alive, to witness life, to simply be in that moment and enjoy the show. And it’s real, unlike this post , unlike social media which is fake, a world of bots and algorithms designed to direct you away from the present moment and the wonder around you. Designed to modify your behavior and your beliefs, to shock you into buying back some piece of peace and comfort, to keep you logged into the machine as long as possible so the algorithms can track your searches, your likes, you psychology and then train you like a dog to salivate and the ring of its bell. Sunsets are way better. I’ll be singing down the sunset this arvo at the Shaws Bay Hotel, just out of Ballina. Come and share in a moment of real beauty - a meaningfulness that you can trust to be as fleeting as life itself, with no desire to track you. Although I will be trying to sell you something, as I am now. Ah it’s a complex transaction is this…. Give me likes and feed my addiction, buy my music and feed my family
This Friday 20 Jan Sunset - I’ll be singing my heart out at . If that’s your local, or kind of local I’d love to see you there. I’m on from 5pm. Get off the socials and come be social. Big thanks to for the gig and for this capture - taken at Delaara and Jeremy’s beautiful and heartfelt charming wedding day late last year. The pic captures me playing my Cole Clark Angel 3. I get so many comments about how beautiful this guitar is- both inside and out. Since adding this to my collection, it’s fast become the axe of choice for acoustic gigs. It’s such an honest and clear sound - crisp but still so yummy warm. Love it. Well done - masters of their craft.
Proud Dad moment. My son is very creative. He loves to paint and draw and make up intricate lengthy stories with play-doh. He’s quite content to play with his Lego for hours, making up all kinds of characters, which he gives funny rhyming names and then interacts them with one another. He also comes up with little expressions. A couple of days ago, when I got home from work he charges at me joyfully for a cuddle and says, “you’re a Velociraptor and I’m a meteorite” - it was badass. I laughed to myself and imagined a wrestler saying something like that before a fight. His playfulness with language has really come to life this past year. It makes me think of what the linguist Noam Chomsky said that, “creativity is innate”. Or Picasso, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once you grow up.” The realities of economic management and survival seem at times at odds with our natural state of being in wonder. There are some who’s sense of play translates well to the money game, there are others traumatized by the drama of money’s absence. I’d like to oversimplify the whole thing by saying, “have fun, enjoy every moment, you are an innately creative being, play your way to prosperity “ , but I don’t wish to insult the very real struggles of those stressed to the eyeballs with economic and existential uncertainty - 2022 was a tough year for many in our local area, some losing everything in flood and having to begin again from scratch. May opportunities for creativity and free play be plentiful in 2023 and may we find innovative solutions together as a species to prolong our time of wonder beneath the Sun and Stars. May we not be Velociraptors just yet. ;)
This mornings vinyl of choice and classic album The Smashing Pumpkins ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness’ - I remember when this album came out and I was living and creating at The Biscuit Factory, an arts space and living space we set up in an old Clothing Factory in Collingwood near the corner of Jonson and Smith. It’s been demolished since, but it was a very unique piece of alternative culture history in early 90’s Melbourne. All of the artists involved in the space were all totally passionate about their music. Everything from Monster Magnet, Kyuss, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, the pixies, Urge Overkill, the beastie boys, Cranky, Rage against the machine, Beasts of Burbon, KimSalmon AndThe surrealists, Dave Graney and the Coral snakes - there was a lot of great music being played, but it was very common to hear someone complaining at the music choice, “what’s this s**t?” Or “not this s**t again” - for some reason we could all agree when this masterpiece came out. It was much anticipated after Siamese Dream which was also a popular choice. Loving listening to The Smashing Pumpkins this morning. It’s aged well. The production is awesome. The drums, the guitars, Billy’s unmistakable beautiful snarl. Truly wonderful piece of art. The artwork on the album is lovely too.
This piece of vinyl is a very welcome addition to the collection. The Seabenz ‘Tremors’ . This is such creative and tight musicianship and musicality. The production lays on a tasty layer of good dirt. You feel like you’re at the jam and it’s a cool jam. All the cool kids are there, just as all the cool kids have this album. If you want to be one of the cool kids get yourself this piece of history. Make sure you were there at the gig - dig? This is a great moment captured. All my favorite moments of gigging over the years have been the jams, when the vocals get out the way and the band wanders, elevates, takes off and lands somewhere new in some before un-imagined wonderland of play. This album speaks to that side of my joy. It’s Post Rock Instrumental and the ears are every bit as happy as the heart taking in this moment. Well done guys. Five Stars ⭐️
Years keep rolling by like waves and wrinkles keep rolling in and settling upon the sandy shore of my face. Lines telling stories of love and loss; grief and longing, of hopes dashed, of joy sweetened or ripened with sorrow before falling forever from the tree or it’s making. There is wisdom no doubt in the waves crashing, like the salt you can taste in tears. To know thyself, to care for oneself, to reach out of the darkness of your failings, your flaws, your weaknesses, your doubts, your inhibitions, your heartbreaks, your loneliness and touch once more the warmth of hopeful light - such are the kind of reflections I experience in contemplation of my aging face. What did Joseph Campbell say? “The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.” It’s a Hallmark card or a bumper sticker sure, a cliché to set in stone perhaps - or a simple point on a map to show you where north is. Words, words, blah, blah, take whatever you want from it - it’s just a face reflecting. Who knows maybe I’m just muddying up the water to appear deep? Probably #2023
I’ll be singing my heart out tonight with . We’d love to see you there. Big thanks to for the gig and for the pic.
Playing a sunset set tonight singing away the blues of one year and swooning in the new one as part of Byron Bay’s Soul Street NYE celebrations. I’ll be on just after 6 and I’d love to see you there. Much gratitude to all you wonderful folk out there that have come along to support my live music journey over the past year and to all of you also that have shown your love through the on-line socials - wishing you a healthy, meaningful, purposeful and prosperous 2023. Be kind to one another and create beauty wherever you can; whether through friendship, food, love, community service, art, music, poetry, dance, design, fashion, decency, self sacrifice, the written or spoken word. Go out there and dazzle the world with all you’ve got. Be a Sun, Be a Star or Be a Moon. Just don’t be another black hole ar****le sucking the life out of everything ;) big love and smiles- signing off for 2022 - Andy
