There’s a common myth perpetuated throughout the fitness world that if work on your abs, you will see your abs. But there’s no way to specifically target an area to “melt the fat” there. (“Spot reduction” is a myth.) When you overeat, your genetics determines where the excess fat will be stored: usually in the gut for men or in the thighs/hips for women. In the same vein, when you undereat, your body determines where it breaks the fat down: usually it’s occurs in a top down fashion. (Face first, thighs or gut last) If you want your abs to show, you need to get to 15% body fat or lower. And the only way to do that is through a caloric deficit. While it’s true that strengthening your abs will help them grow and important for your overall health, posture and reducing back pain, Doing core exercises is not going to melt the fat in that area. Hence these “exercises” are all diet related.

It had been months since I #slacklined. My friend setup a 100+ foot long-line and invited me. So I went for an hour and tried my feet at it. Turns out, I hadn’t lost a single skill. In fact, I walked the entire length of it from the get-go with the greatest of ease, more relaxed and better than ever before, for such a long and high line. Relaxed enough that I actually was able to practice things that would normally scare me on a higher line. I’ve experienced this sort of relaxed-advancement many times and wanted to point out what’s happening: It’s great to constantly learn skill after skill but taking an extended break helps you assimilate and internalize all that you’ve learned. A lot of things you used to have to consciously think about, become internalized, standardized, hardened like cement, and permanently edged in your brain. (“It’s like riding a bike.”) If we stop strength #training, yes we will start to lose strength after a month, but the skill aspects don’t get lost at the same pace and in fact, could be beneficial, because all those tiny cues you used to consciously keep in mind, you don’t need to anymore and can start working on new things. We have all experienced this with our various hobbies and we shouldn’t beat ourselves up for taking extended breaks. Life is cyclical and seasonal and it’s unnatural to do the same exact routine for months on end with no interruption. You might actually be doing yourself a favor and find yourself able to level-up even faster when you get back in the rhythm. 🎶
