Our Story
When we got pregnant with Kimmy, our first child, I witnessed the tyranny of the reproduction system. My badass wife, who was the first women to complete French Commando School, was sleeping on our couch at 3:30 in the afternoon just 3 weeks after getting a positive pregnancy test. I would hear her gagging in the mornings after she choked down the prenatal vitamin pills that the Army gave her. Fast forward 30 years and eight more kids and we’ve become pretty expert “growing the family”.
I was working with a company in the Research Triangle Park, NC who had invented a small batch food processing system that could allow supplements or even active pharmaceutical ingredients (API’s) to be precisely dosed and suspended in a tasty fruit puree. .I immediately recalled how uncomfortable prenatal pills made Karee when she was pregnant. Her solution to pills that made her sick was to mix them with food or she would be nauseous all day. I saw this and knew this technology needed to deliver a solution for pregnant moms so Babykixx was born as a prenatal vitamin solution. The name babykixx really resonated with me because that first baby kick represents something really profound for the mom but also for the dad. Us dads don’t feel the morning sickness, tiredness, and cravings but we can feel the baby kick. The baby kick takes the experience of having children to a whole new level of realness.
As I did my market research to build the company and find the brand voice I discovered something really troubling about the maternity marketplace. But also the whole ethos around having and raising children. People are really afraid. Not the good kind of fear that alerts you to something serious but kind of a panic. When I studied it, I saw people nurturing this fear to sell products. As a father of nine kids, it made me a little mad. I see the effects of fear- delaying marriage and children and then worrying about having kids when you’re older. There is fear around conceiving and there is even more fear around not concieving. I vowed we would never contribute to that fear and instead encourage couples to trust in nature, serendipity and God. When we were pregnant with our fifth child, which officially made us insane, a close friends father took me to the side and told me “with every kid, God gave us a way to make it work.” He understood our apprehension and that message was not only encouraging but true.
Perhaps it has eluded you that a man is passionate about a segment that is normally viewed as a women’s issue. I have to confess that for the first year, I believed that I needed a woman to take the lead. It is only recently that I have “manned-up” and recognize that this is not a women’s issue but this is a human issue. Here comes the social blasphemy. Women do not have babies, couples do! For now, this remains a biological fact.
