BREAKING: Brittney Griner has been sentenced to 9 years in prison after a Moscow court found her guilty on drug smuggling and possession charges.

The widely expected verdict caps a monthlong trial and comes nearly 6 months after she was arrested at a Russian airport with cannabis in her luggage. Her legal team had called for an acquittal or else leniency.

Russian officials said a potential deal with the U.S. to secure her release would have to wait until after a verdict was reached in her case.
