Great news…....Check out the new 'Feather Friendly' window technology at The Patton Center, UT Marine Science Institute, Port Aransas.

🎉 We’re thrilled to announce that Feather Friendly window technology, funded by the 2024-25 Green Fund Awards, is now installed at the Patton Center! 🎉

A huge thank you to the UTMSI Green Team for their hard work and dedication. This innovative technology will help prevent bird strikes, making our facility safer for our feathered friends while preserving the beauty of our windows.

Curious to see the new installation? Stop by and check it out! The Patton Center is open from 10 AM to 4 PM, Tuesday through Saturday, and best of all, admission is free. Please note that we’re closed on Sundays and Mondays.

This installation is just the first of many windows at UTMSI to receive this bird-friendly upgrade, so stay tuned as we continue to enhance our campus with sustainable solutions!

We’re proud of this step toward sustainability and grateful for the Green Fund's support in making it happen.

Texas cities begin "Lights Out Nights" to save migrating birds 12/09/2024

Ever wondered why it's important for "Lights Out" during bird migration, read on....
Video clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zXEoGqLW4U

Why go Lights Out?
Most birds migrate at night, employing an incredible sensory system to navigate and to orient in darkness. Light pollution attracts and disorients these migrating birds, disrupting these systems and increasing birds' vulnerability to collisions with structures. An estimated 365 – 988 million birds die in collisions with buildings annually, including a number of species of high conservation concern. You can help dramatically reduce the hazards from light pollution for nocturnally migrating birds by turning off all non-essential lighting.
To see when birds are migrating over your area anywhere in the continental US, follow our Migration Dashboard here: https://dashboard.birdcast.info.
For more information about BirdCast and the Lights Out program, visit: https://birdcast.info/science-to-action/lights-out.
For Lights Out alerts in additional cities, states, and regions in the continental US, please visit Dr. Kyle Horton's CSU Aeroeco Lab U.S. Lights Out page.
We thank you for your commitment to making the night skies of our region safer for migratory birds!

As space operations grow along the South Texas coast, Audubon Texas has grown increasingly concerned about the impacts of rocket launches on shore-nesting birds like Least Terns. One Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program survey found that after a recent rocket launch, all nests observed had “either missing eggs, had damaged eggs, or both.” Read more about how space-age development affects birds and other wildlife here on Earth: bit.ly/3LpwzV7
