Just as nutrition and physical activity is essential to maintaining a healthful body, meditation is essential to maintaining a healthful mind. Studies show that incorporating as little as 20 minutes of meditation a day results in reduced stress, anxiety, depression, and increases overall happiness.

Meditation is also used to explore one's spirituality, whatever that may mean to the individual (spirituality has a very broad spectrum!). Studies show those who include spirituality into their lives are at lower risk of developing chronic disease and mental health issues.

So YOU deserve a little meditation in YOUR life! 😊

Daily Health Tip:

Vitamin D is essential for aiding the absorption of calcium, as well as other vitamins and minerals. The general rule of thumb for getting enough vitamin D from sunlight is to limit exposure to roughly half the time it would take for you to burn, (i.e. if you burn in 30 minutes, 15 minutes of sunlight would provide you with adequate vitamin D for the day). The larger amount of skin exposed, the better the absorption. If you don't have access to sunlight or live in colder climates, be sure to take vitamin D supplements!

Starting off your day with a fresh smoothie will give you an energy boost that lasts all day long! Using 1-2 bananas as a "base" will ensure your smoothie has a creamier texture!

Daily Health Tip:

All oils, even olive oil, are highly processed and are the most caloric dense food on the planet with very low nutritional value. They are high in saturated fats (which are the main cause of high blood pressure and heart disease) and should be avoided as much as possible. Try replacing your oil-based dressings and toppings with healthy, whole food, plant-based monosaturated and polysaturated fats, such as avocados, nuts and seeds!

Daily Health Tip: Having a hard time giving up sugar? Try substituting table sugar with coconut sugar. Coconut sugar is a better alternative to white table sugar because it is lower on the Glycemic Index and it contains trace minerals.

Daily Health Fact: Did you know that Type 2 Diabetes is caused by insulin resistance? Contrary to popular belief, insulin resistance is triggered, over time, from a high fat diet, particularly fat consumed from animal products. Carbohydrates are NOT responsible, however they should be carefully monitored until insulin resistance has been fully reversed. The most effective diet in reversing Type 2 Diabetes is a whole foods, plant based diet low in fat.
