Drug Addiction Treatment: Assist A Loved One with Recovery Treatment

When you're trying to find drug addiction help, it's important to look into all of your options and choose the program that is right for you. People beat their addictions every day, using both inpatient treatment programs and outpatient programs.

The type of program you choose should depend entirely on your personal needs.

1. Outpatient treatment programs give you more freedom so that you can work and be home with your family at night. Daily check-in programs require you to report to a drug abuse counselor every day for a short session. This helps keep you on track during the recovery process.

2. Inpatient treatment programs require the patient to live at the facility for the duration, typically 30, 60 or 90 days, of his or her treatment. The process starts with detoxification. During this time, typically about one week, you may experience withdrawal symptoms. Facilities have medical staff on hand to help you cope with the detox process. The medical personnel can also administer medication to relieve some of your symptoms. Once the detox process is over, your regular treatment begins.

A typical day at an inpatient facility might include:

a) Group therapy sessions.
b) Individual therapy sessions.
c) Educational lectures.
d) Skills training.

Halloween Partying: Celebrate the Spirits Without Spirits

There are several ways you can have a hauntingly fun Halloween sober. While participating in the festivities is a must in order to feel a part of the celebration and not isolated, you need to choose the activities you attend or host carefully. Here are creative ways you can celebrate Halloween that focuses on old-fashioned entertainment while keeping sober:

1. Halloween Charades
This is the perfect game to keep your mind busy and off any thoughts of alcohol on Halloween. Take your charades game to the next level by requiring your guests to show up in a costume they’ve designed. Before your guests arrive, write the names of spooky characters and movies on separate pieces of paper. Place the papers folded in a deep bowl or basket. If plenty of friends will be participating in your charades game, make it extra competitive by separating them into teams. Give the team with the most correct answers a plate of delicious homemade treats.

2. Host a Halloween Extravaganza
Hosting your own eerie Halloween party allows you to be in control of your environment. Invite only guests who support you to your holiday celebration. Decorate your party area with smoke machines, carved pumpkins, body parts, orange and black streamers and party balloons. Helium for balloons is a must. Plan ahead, and reserve your helium balloon tank as soon as possible, because they’re in high demand during the Halloween season. Here are other ways to make your Halloween bash successful:

a) Serve Halloween-themed foods and desserts.
b) Offer only alcohol-free beverages.
c) Choose a unique theme for your Halloween party costumes and celebration.

3. Halloween Bonfire
Plan a bone-chilling bonfire for you and your supportive friends in your backyard or rent a spot at a local campground. Set the mood by decorating the area where you’ll be hosting your bonfire with gravestones, body parts and faux bats. Also, hang ghosts and zombies from the trees in that area. While everyone is roasting marshmallows and hot dogs around the bonfire, take turns telling your scariest ghost stories or hold a seance.

4. Choose Creativity
Being involved in interactive activities will not only offer you and friends fun things to make for Halloween and unique things to do, but it’ll also provide you healthy ways to distract from any temptation to drink.

a) Host a pumpkin carving contest at your home. Create work stations that include a pumpkin and the supplies needed for carving and decorating it for each guest. Hand out candy prizes for the best intricately carved pumpkins.
b) Throw an all-night scary movie marathon for you and your best buddies. Serve alcohol-free punch, Halloween-themed treats, flavored popcorn and plenty of candy.
c) Host a celebrity costume party where guests arrive on a red carpet you rolled out for them. Assign someone to take pictures of your guests as they arrive. Hand out awards for the best authentic celebrity costume.

5. Give Back
One of the most rewarding and fun things you can make for Halloween are goody bags filled with treats, toys and necessities for children who are less fortunate or in the hospital during the holiday. Contact hospitals, foster care facilities and your local church to get names of children and families with kids who would benefit from your generosity. When you deliver the treat bags to the children on Halloween, nothing will feel as wonderful as when you see their little faces light up when they receive their treats.

6. Pumpkin Bowling
This game will offer you and your guests a lot of excitement and will test everyone’s bowling skills. Set-up 10 empty plastic bottles in an outdoor area or large recreation room in your home. Use pumpkins that are approximately 6-inches to knock the bottles down. Keep extra pumpkins on-hand for guests in case any of them break. Have some simple giveaways for your guests who get the most strikes.

Only you know what you can handle when it comes to Halloween fun that won’t jeopardize your sobriety. Whether you choose to host a costume party or simply have an intimate gathering with supportive friends to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters, always do what’s right for you to ensure your continued sobriety.

Children of Alcoholics: How are They Affected?

Many alcoholics and drug addicts believe that their drinking or drug problem does not affect anyone else. They believe they are not hurting anyone, but themselves. However, the harsh reality is, they are hurting many people around them, and if they have children, they are especially being effected.

Many kids who have a parent who uses drugs or alcohol experience issues related to their mom or dad’s overuse far into adulthood. Here are some ways children of alcoholics and addicts are affected:

They often do not have a genuine concept of what is normal. When a child’s father or mother is an alcoholic or addict, he typically does not interact in relationships as those who have parents that are not addicts. Children of a parent or guardian who uses often experience relationships that are usually strained within their families. Tensions are often high within their family unit. Therefore, a child of an addict may not know how to interact in relationships with others in a “normal” way. They feel like they are different than others because of this thought process as well. They can become depressed and feel isolated because they have poor relationship skills and not know how to normally interact with others. Children of an addict also typically develop a pattern of blaming their using parent for their behavior and sometimes their feelings, so oftentimes these patterns continue into future relationships as well.

Generally they are very serious. They may have been criticized in the past when loosening up, so they are usually unsure of how to have fun. Maybe they do not know how to have fun because so many times in the past when something good was supposed to happen it always turned out in disappointment because their alcoholic or addicted parent sabotaged that time in their life.

They might fear confrontation as caused by the fear of others being angry with them. They may be afraid that any conflict might turn violent or emotionally abusive, so they avoid it at all costs.

They may be constantly seeking approval from others. Regardless of whether or not the action is healthy, they may be searching for approval from wherever they can get it. They can even go out of their way to please others because they cannot handle anyone being unhappy with them due to the fear of bringing up feelings related to the past. They may even become perfectionists, so that others will never be disappointed in them.

They often have difficulties with romantic relationships. It is oftentimes hard to trust someone and rely on someone when they were not able to trust and rely on their parent. Growing up where many things were covered up by lies and deceit, it may be a challenge to know who one can trust. They can have so much mistrust of others, they find it nearly impossible to be in a relationship.
