Bentiu City Updates
Bentiu City is the capital of the South Sudanese state of Unity near the border with Sudan.
Supported by IOM, with funds from World Bank, South Sudan's Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs & Disaster Management, and the State Government of Unity State formed the State Disaster Management Council.
The Council will work to mitigate disaster risks in the communities.
Record floods in recent years have forced women to harvest water lily bulbs in South Sudan's Unity State - which their families eat when food is scarce.
RESPONSE:
WFP’s rice-growing scheme on low-lying, flood-prone farmland is one of the interventions through which people have been helped. It aims to support communities in improving food security, restoring livelihoods, strengthening resilience to shocks, and building self-reliance - while also contributing to peace.
Through the programme, communities are trained to plant, manage and harvest rice, a water-loving crop that thrives in flooded areas.
Supported by the United Kingdom, the project and similar ones have reached some 1,200 families in Northern Bahr El Gazal and neighbouring Warrap states.

With support from WFP, Meer and other women have started growing vegetables in community gardens in Bentiu, where they also do fishing.
