Dispelling Myths About Test-Driven Development — Agile Institute 10/11/2023

I've really enjoyed writing this one. It's only taken me 20 years... (Thankfully it's shorter than you might expect.)

Dispelling Myths about Test-Driven Development ( )

( and all that jazz.)

Dispelling Myths About Test-Driven Development — Agile Institute A while back I read a LinkedIn post where a Test-Driven Development (TDD) evangelist suggested something truly surprising and disagreeable to me. Not long after that, a client of mine sent a video of another TDD proponent, and asked my opinion. Surprisingly the proponent on the video seemed to have

Good Software Design - Part 4: The Role of Tests — Agile Institute 19/07/2023

The 4th and final installment of the "Good Design" series is up!

Good Software Design - Part 4: The Role of Tests — Agile Institute Part 3 revealed how refactoring can be the primary design activity on an Agile team. (If you haven’t read that one yet, it’s here . Or, to start at Part 1 of the series, start here .) Diligent, confident refactoring is possible to the degree that the code is tested through an automated test suit...

Agile Institute 20/06/2023

Agile Institute is...holding a sale?!

That's right, after 15 years I'm finally offering my first "sale."

It’s the “Fund the Final Draft Sale!”

I need to concentrate on finishing up the draft of the book, Essential Test-Driven Development, by 31Jul (for a publication date in December of this year!) So I’ll been doing less training (and biting deeply into savings) this summer.

The sale: For courses/coaching scheduled to be delivered on or AFTER 21Aug2023, and paid in full by 31Jul2023, all services (the initial training, any subsequent training, and all coaching) delivered by the end of this year will be discounted by 20%.

Brief descriptions of the courses are on our homepage (linked with this post).

Good Software Design - Part 2: Code Smells — Agile Institute Last month’s article (found here ) introduced the notion of code smells . Code smells are names given to those instinctual thoughts you have whenever you look at a chunk of less-than-elegant code. Some are subtle, and some really stink. Stinky Code Each code smell represents something that would

World as Lover, World as Self: 30th Anniversary Edition: Courage for Global Justice and Planetary Renewal 07/04/2023

Sound familiar…?

“…Work is a vehicle for the creation and expression of our deepest values. Meaningful employment is more important than the goods it produces. By linking people to their fellow beings in reciprocal relationship and enhancing their self-respect, the value of their work is beyond monetary measure.”

Joanna Macy, “World as Lover, World as Self (30th anniversary edition)” p. 105 - a beautifully written book principally on systems theory, ethics, and deep ecology (though you might think I’ve given you the old bait-&-switch for the first half of the book).

Quite a few teams in this week's Essential Test-Driven Development course were trying out CRC cards using "stickies" in Miro. They struggled to find a way to align responsibilities on the left and collaborators on the right. So I went looking for a template. Failing that, I tried a few crazy things.

Gave up on that and just accepted the limitations of Miro's sticky notes. And yet, I think we landed on a reasonable solution...

Happy Holidays to all my wonderful clients, "followers," colleagues, and friends!

More specifically, and in order of the 2022 starting date : Happy Bodhi Day (belated...I was very busy doing nothing), Hanukkah, Yule, Festivus ("for the rest of us"), Christmas, Kwanzaa, ______________ (please fill in the blank, and accept my apologies, if I missed your traditional December holiday(s)), and New Year!

Another great year for Agile Institute, and it's not quite over yet (a rather large remote/private CSD this week, then I'm "closing up shop" for December).

Sharpen Your Own Knives — Agile Institute 17/09/2022

Don't neglect those essential practices...

Sharpen Your Own Knives — Agile Institute You’ve heard the old adage about the lumberjack who—in order to cut a tree in an hour—will take 45 minutes to sharpen the saw? It’s a great analogy, but it really needs updating. Not many of us are that familiar with the logging industry. I like to use the metaphor of the chef who sharpens h...
