Hi I’m Chloe, the captain of CUHK EDT for 23/24 👋 I started debating as a freshman in CUHK and have (suprisingly) stayed in the Team ever since. My first ever break after 1.5 years of debating 😓 was at a mini tournament that was just 5 room big and I was carried by my Vice-Captain, Charles, so the journey hasn’t been the smoothest 🧠 but it’s been a fruitful one nonetheless. I know how challenging it may be especially at the start due to the steep learning curve but I’m here to dispel all those discouraging voices in the heads of our debate freshies. Post-NEADC, I’ll work even harder (alongside my amazing board members) to ensure the team flourishes throughout the rest of my captaincy 💪

10/01/2024

This is Wen Yiran (Yvonne) studying Economics Dual Degree Program with Tsinghua University. I joined EDT because I think this is a place where your knowledge can grow the quickest as your thoughts clash with the others’. You will need to understand the society from different aspects and be able to look from various actor’s perspective in order to be a good debator, which makes debating hard yet fascinating at the same time. I stayed in the team since the start of my university journey and I look forward to get back and reunite with the team after my Tsinghua years.

Last weekend, our captains, Charles and Chloe, represented CUHK at Shantou University's English Festival 🎪 We took part in the debate contest and travelled alongside ELTU teachers with 2 other CUHK students who "public-spoke" and sang 🎤; one of them being Miu who broke GDC when they represented us last time even without formal debate training (big shoutout to Miu!!!!) It was a great learning opportunity getting to understand the mainland circuit better too 🤝

Thank you to (from Dr Jose Lai and Dr Joyce Lee who followed us to Shantou to ELTU staff members who helped with the logistic side of things) 🙏 Looking forward to more collaborative opportunities with ELTU and other official university departments

Semester 2 is going to be a busy one with the hosting of our own tournament (HKDC 2024), lots of AP training to prep for majors beyond NEADC and in the summer 🌞 and another big secret project (iykyk) 😉

Good luck for everyone's finals and that's a wrap for semester 1 🎉

Let us hope the team can keep up the momentum for the rest of the year.

Our Story

CUHK EDT has been active in various international debating tournaments including World Universities Debating Championships, Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships, United Asian Debating Championships, North East Asian Open etc. since the 1990s and has achieved good reputation amongst overseas universities as one of the strongest teams from Hong Kong and has forged friendships and alliances with top debating clubs and world renowned coaches around the world.

As one of the top university debating teams in Hong Kong, CUHK English Debating Team (CUHK EDT) has gained local recognition by being the winner of the Intervarsity Debating Championships during 2008 – 2011, the historical annual debating competition between CUHK and HKU. In 2011, we stepped up as a leader in the debating arena in Asia and hosted the Hong Kong Debate Open 2011 (HKDO 2011), which is a huge success.

In 2015, our team made a major breakthrough in the World Universities Debating Championships and was crowned Champion for the ESL category of this prestigious competition.

In 2019 our team became the first team from Hong Kong, and the second team in North East Asia to break in the Open Category in the World Universities Debating Championship. We also broke third and emerged as Semi-Finalists at the United Asian Debating Championships, with one of our debaters Joshua Yeung receiving 2nd Overall Best Speaker in Asia, breaking all records for North East Asia.

This year, we are looking to build on that and achieve greater success in both local and international tournaments. We look not only at championships and honors, but more importantly our growth as effective communicators and clear thinkers.

CUHKEDT is like a big family. Throughout the years, we have received strong support from our alumni. From trainings to adjudicating in major tournaments, from advice to donations for team operation, their contribution is essential to the success of our team. Hereby we thank them for their efforts and love. Join us in this big family and let us take on the journey to excellence together!
