One of the tools that is sometimes used by curators and researchers who are working with surviving garments is the experiment of burning a tiny amount of the textile involved to more accurately determine what the fiber content is.
Each different natural fiber and synthetic has different reactions to burning, and while the test is not 100 accurate, it helps at least narrow the possibilities.
