Starts at 9 am today!
This Saturday, June 1st, starting at 9 am, bring your Kids and Grandkids to Tugman Park, north of Lakeside
for our near “guarantee” for kids to catch rainbow trout.
At the Jim Farmer Memorial Kids Free Fishing Day, kids and adults, after registering, will go through educational
stations and learn: fish ID, knot tying, fishing courtesy, spin casting, fly casting, water safety. And, be ready for the event
to be temporarily interrupted by United States Coast Guard with an awesome close-up helicopter/swimmer exercise in Eel Lake.
Then, Kids under 14yrs old can fish in a net pen full of hungry trout. Several are trophy sized.
IT’S NOT OVER YET. Once the kids have caught at least 1 trout, a photo station is next for folks who want smiling kid/fish pictures. Then attendees can visit the Fish Cleaning Station where hard-working volunteers will clean and put your trout in a bag of ice for the trip home. With bagged fish in hand, kids that have completed all the stations, will receive a FREE kid fishing rod or tackle box.
A barbequed hotdog/chips/water lunch and snacks will be for sale for hungry families after such an eventful morning.
This event is sponsored by the Oregon Parks and Recreation, Fish & Wildlife, Eel Tenmile STEP, TLBP, and many, many local businesses.
We wish everyone a safe Free Fishing Day Weekend and hope to
See you Saturday at Tugman Park!!
(Last registration at 1:30 pm).
Come one, come all!
The Trophy Trout have arrived for this year’s Jim Farmer Memorial Tugman Park Free Fishing Day, on June 1st, 2024, from 9 am to 2 pm (last registration at 1:30). Tugman Park is just north of Lakeside.
The pen going for a ride to its new location.
Finally, the net was hung from the net pen and the pen was transported to the cove near the water plant, where it will stay until Free Fishing Day. It will be filled with smolt at the end of April. We will feed them until June 1st, at which time the pen will be moved to the fishing dock, where kids will be guaranteed to catch a fish out of it.
The net is not visible - it’s hanging underneath, in the water.
Next, ODFW upgraded the trap with fresh boards and converted the trap to a fish ladder.
We had our workday last Wednesday, April 10th. Here are photos of the net pen, which was pulled by boat to the boat ramp from across the lake, where it is stored/anchored most of the year. It needed a good scrubbing by power washer, as the lake birds had enjoyed it as a roost.
Thank you to everyone who spent a beautiful work day at Eel Lake. We released our smolt, upgraded the trap, and cleaned and prepared our net pen (the net pen is where we grow the smolt for a month in preparation for Free Fishing Day in June ). I am posting the video of the smolt being released first.
Monthly meeting this Thursday, 3/28. 5:30 pm potluck, 6:00 pm meeting.
