There are many elements that affect the performance of my horse; my fitness, his fitness, variations in our training program.

But absolutely no amount of training prepares him for the challenges of autumn.

As soon as his coat begins to change, his feed increases to meet the oncoming winter and the time spent stabled munching hay, is equal to time turned out.

And the call comes through, ‘Time to clip?’ …and we’re through. Blackberry season behind us and our favourite winter challenge ahead!

Zans Splashin’ Boogie, rock on! 💕

So, we have our first ten miles successfully under our belts and Splash is growing in confidence faster this year than any other.

Without a doubt, having strong focus and drive helped us both and coming to the end of our winter challenge left me a bit deflated. It was a relief and a delight when Top Barn Horsemanship announced they had a Summer Challenge and we’ve signed up!

It starts on 1st May and we’re picking up our momentum. 4 sections; riding 100 miles, 1000 minutes, 10 challenges (within the challenge) and walk 10,000 steps, all with one horse. With time constraints on each section it’s just the type of focus I’m looking for to improve my fitness!

Sometimes life just has a way of making you reevaluate your priorities. I’m just so grateful that I have an opportunity to try again, and to try harder to turn dreams into reality.

So, after Splash had a jaw dropping accident, we stopped, regrouped, repaired and got ready to try again.

Thumbs up from the vet and the equine dentist, and we hit the road running, so to speak. A few quiet hacks to establish where we were at and then we went for an indoor pole clinic to ride with friends, out of the rain.

Without a doubt, Splash’s three week unfortunate break was a blessing in disguise. He was relaxed and bouncing, producing some of his best work to date and I couldn’t have been more proud of him.

What happened next was pure rider error and as we finished our last transition for the night, a missed step and loss of balance ensured we were going to end 2021 on the 29th of October and 2022 was going to address the winter blues from a totally different angle.

And that is where we are at today; our last week of the Top Barn Twelve Week Challenge is just ahead and we’re going to smash it! The challenge to be fit to ride by the last week is in hand and when we get there, our adventures will begin again!!

Life is just a balancing act, really.

We balance the emotions with the physical capabilities, and then put fuel in the tank to support the metabolic needs of the mind, body and soul.

We work, rest and play in equal measures, and with good balance we can focus on good health and happiness.

And then, for no apparent reason, the wheels fall off, and we step back, re-evaluate and start again.
