Clay Center Community High School Class of 1970 52 (50+1+1) Year Class Reunion

A BIG THANK YOU to all of the CCCHS Class of 1970 Classmates that attended one or all of the events of our 52 (50+1+1) Year Reunion! Message to classmate Jean (Janssen) Martinez, who was unable to attend: "You were right Jean, It WAS a blast and the neatest and groovy!"

Forty-five classmates, twenty-three spouses and/or guests, and two former CCCHS teachers attended at least one of the events. They included: Bill Gray; Arizona; Lee Starkweather and Teri, California; Kay Neill Kraft and Terry, Colorado; Chris Porter Glidden, Indiana; Leslie Friesen, Kentucky; Rod Goodin and Dora, Nebraska; Chris Chartier Morgan, Oklahoma; Cindy Wohler Zimmerman, Texas; and Lorenzo Cugniet and Paty, Santiago, Chile.
Kansas classmates included: Gary Schooley and Marsha, Abilene; Allan Milbradt, Augusta; Daryl Ahlquist and Nancy, Erie; Rod Spellman, Hiawatha; Lesle Lietzen, and Marilyn Meek Ellis and Larry Ellis, Emporia; Sally Deetjen Porter and Jim, Overland Park; Debbie Hemphill Hall, El Dorado; Susan Alexander Schaefer, Linn; Galen Hofmann and Nancy, Leonardville; Ron Roth and Marilyn, Green; Roger Fowles and Kim, and Gerald Klocke, Wichita; Maribeth Wells Brown and Sam, Topeka; Susan Butterfield and Diana Robertson, and Martha Valentine Dorssom, Lawrence; Arnie Christensen and Margaret Paul (California), Deb Woellhof Braden and Jerry, Richard Brenner, Cathy Conrad Harman and Hank, Brad Logan, Greg Nelson and Sonia, and Arlon Meek, Manhattan; and Linda Spellman Cunningham and Dallas, Teresa Garrett Richter, Darrell Gingles, Mike Kidwell, Dee Liby Knitter, Paul Lane and Paula, Durwin Mall and Shirley, Sheryl Schurle McMahan and Steve, Tom Meek, Judy Leiszler-Dunn and Kevin, Gail O’Donnell Hileman and Terry, and Kenneth Stitt, Clay Center. Two former teachers joined the festivities: Mr. Gary Unruh (Clay Center) and Mrs. Jana (Sibley) Finkbiner (Wichita) and her es**rt/brother-in-law Doug Erickson (Clay Center).

Those of you who know our class well, may have noticed the name Judy Staley Stitt is missing from the above list. While, she was a big part of the planning, she did not attend. She chose to join her daughter on a once-in-a-life time trip to Hawaii. She is our treasurer and we did tease her that we would be doing an audit on the class bank account when she returns!

You readers may ask, “Why a 52 (50+1+1) year class reunion?” That is a very good question. Let me give you the short version. Due to COVID 19, our 50 year reunion (September 2020) was cancelled. One year later, same story second verse; the 50+1 year reunion (October 2021) was cancelled at first, then resurrected and downsized. The “never give up” reunion planning committee pondered and thought to try a June 2022 date, hoping to get “in between” the COVID outbreaks.

For those of you who are “into numbers” you will like this! The CCCHS Class of 1970 celebrated our 50+1+1 (52) year class reunion June 17 & 18, 2022. Most of the Class of 1970 classmates were born in 1952 and will celebrate our 70th birthdays this year. And (without planning it) for those classmates who registered for the “full reunion weekend package”; which included a Friday night meal, Saturday noon meal, Saturday evening meal and a groovy class T-shirt, the total dollar amount was….. you may have guessed it… 52 dollars! The BONUS icing on the reunion cake is that 2022 is the Year of the Tiger per the Zodiac calendar and the tiger just happens to be our high school mascot! And, one more cool number thing, there were 45 classmates, plus 23 spouses and/or guests, plus 2 former CCCHS teachers that attended at least one of the events during the weekend, (my high school math teachers would be proud of me) which adds up to be 70!!

Friday evening at Common Ground was the venue for our first gathering of the weekend. Classmates and guests heartily greeted each other with handshakes and hugs. The former Duckwalls (as the Class of 1970 remembers) was humming with laughter and conversation. Tom Meek gave the blessing and everyone enjoyed the smoked pork chops compliments of Roth Farms (Ron and Robert Roth) along with sides ordered from Dieck’s Catering Clay Center Locker.

It was determined that there needed to be a class group photo. The “Welcome to Clay Center” mural located just a short jaunt down the alley was the selected location. Everyone jaunted back to Common Ground after the photo op, for more of that laughter and conversation.

Vintage Gardens Downtown was home base all day Saturday beginning at 9:30 am with Tasty Pastry rolls and beverages. Most of Friday night’s participants plus a few new/old faces joined the festivities on Saturday.

Directing classmates to the Saturday venue (Vintage Gardens Downtown) was “copacetic” when they were told we were meeting at the former Marshall Motors business. Classmate Lee Starkweather shared a few experiences of when he worked for his father at Marshall Motors when he was growing up. One of Lee’s assignments was to “re-shine” the hard wood show room floor after a new car was driven onto it. Lee was pleased to see that the “shine” on that hardwood floor is still “out of sight”!

The committee had set up an area of “remembrance” including Tiger Roar yearbooks, a notebook containing obituaries of our classmates who have passed away, and a collection of memorabilia from Judy Leiszler-Dunn. And there were several items from the family of the late Ed Summers accompanied by a note that read “Class of 70-Greetings and Congrats on having your reunion. Items presented to you are from a box titled “Family” which Ed had in his home. He would like you to have this I’m sure. “Happy Memories for you to enjoy.”

Along the wall were memorial photos (created by Maribeth Wells Brown) honoring classmates who have passed away. Two have been added since our October 2021, 50+1 Year Reunion; Roseanne Bergstrom McCann and Charlie Roberts. A total of 17 classmates are deceased.

And on view was a copy of the six page Special Graduation Edition of The Clay Center Dispatch titled “Congratulations to the Class of 1970 Graduates from the Merchants of Clay Center” honoring the 137 seniors. For each senior The Dispatch printed their photo, parents’ names, plans for the future, and the name of the local business that sponsored the ad. Each classmate enjoyed reading not only what the future plans of other classmates were, but being reminded of what their own plans had been. Another interesting observation was recalling those sponsoring merchants, now fifty-two years later, those that are still in business and those that are not.

Around 10:30 am, a number of classmates and guests carpooled up to Clay Center Community High School where Ron Roth guided a walking tour inside the facilities.
There have been many changes and additions since the Class of 1970 roamed these halls. But, the auditorium, student’s lockers, teacher’s classrooms, the office, the gymnasium, and the Common’s Area with the glass display cases were all easily located.

We paused in what had been Mr. Friesen’s classroom for some reminiscing and sharing of life long lessons learned from him and a few of our other teachers and administration over our four years at CCCHS. There may have been some mention of a few other “lessons learned” or “not learned”, too.

It was determined that there needed to be a class group photo. The Tiger statue on the south side of the school was the selected location. (Does any of this sound familiar?) It took a little more wrangling to get all of the classmates rounded up this time, but a group photo was taken. Plus, an interesting photo of classmate Lorenzo Cugniet (our Foreign Exchange Student who is now a dentist in Chili) holding onto one of the Tiger’s large canines.

While the CCCHS tour was going on, other classmates chose to “take in” the Farmer’s Market, downtown businesses, and a few of the murals around the city.

Classmates gathered back at the venue around noon. Larry Ellis blessed the food and those gathered to be nourished by it. A light lunch was enjoyed that had been prepared by Vathauer Catering.

After lunch, Tom Meek and Allan Milbradt hosted a time of “Reconnect and Reminisce” (round table conversations). Forty-eight attendees partook. Each person was given a page with twenty “Conversation Starters” questions. Instructions were for each table to choose one or a group of the questions, going around the table having each person share their answer or comments. After the first round, the six tables of eight persons at each table checked the number posted on the bottom of their chair which assigned them to a different table. Five rounds of switching tables made it possible to spend a little time with almost every person. There were more than a few that expressed great delight in this activity. A comment made later was that the list of questions “kept the conversations out of the weeds”; meaning they were all “safe topics” to discuss.

The evening events began at 6 p.m. with a social hour. Marty Wallace was the amiable bartender for the evening. Conversation topics were sparked by the items on the “Remembrance table”. Also, the viewing of a power point presentation that had been created by Allan Milbradt with photos from previous reunions, individual year book photos, and photos with dates in honor of those classmates that have passed away.

At precisely 6:45 p.m. the forty-three classmates were directed to a previously determined spot for the group photo. There was shuffling of feet, comments made, and some laughter as classmates chose a place to sit on the floor, sit in a chair, or stand. There were several phones and cameras capturing the assembly. Sam Brown took the official class photo.

Ron Roth offered the invocation. Emcee for the evening Brad Logan gave instructions for an orderly manner for each to make their way to the buffet prepared and served by Arlyss and Jim Vathauer.

To begin the evening program, CCCHS Class of 1970 Foreign Exchange Student Lorenzo Cugniet was invited to share some thoughts. Lorenzo gave an update on “life in Chile”. Patricia, Lorenzo’s wife was with him. Lorenzo talked about their children and grandchildren with great pleasure. He closed by saying “At this time, I would like to thank the Starkweather family who received me at their home and they taught me to be a good person in life. Also, I would like to thank Clay Center Community High School and all the students who received me and made my Senior Year a year that is not easy to forget. God bless you all and hope we’ll meet again.”

Maribeth Wells Brown and Tom Meek read letters from classmates that were unable to attend as well as from two former CCCHS teachers. Classmate Walter Ross was unable to attend because of health issues and sent his best wishes and hopes to attend the reunion in 2025. Classmate Jean Janssen Martinez arrived at CCCHS our junior year, she wrote: I am still amazed at how quickly you included me and made me feel like I was a part of this class. I credit Ms. Dickinson for broadening my horizons and introducing me to authors and literature I still treasure. I credit Mr. Friesen for making such a valiant effort to help me, at least minimally, understand algebra. How I ended up in a wastebasket on top of Mr. Lane’s desk is still a blur and the Ex Lax chocolate chip cookies I passed around in revenge still make ME, but perhaps, not some of you, laugh. ….. My best to all.”

Former CCCHS teacher Crystal (Dickerson) Cross wrote: “Knowing how old you guys are now makes me feel ancient; however, many of you were only 3 or 4 years younger than me when I taught you senior English. You were my first year teaching guinea pigs, and I was so scared and overwhelmed. ….. I lived with two elementary teachers who spent a lot of their time cutting out cute decorations for their classrooms, while I poured over what to teach to ‘overcharged-hormoned’ teenagers who didn’t particularly love English. But I survived – you survived – and I have many fond memories of that year. … In closing I do want to wish you all the best, and I thank you for being such great students that senior year. Even though I worried a lot about my role as teacher, you were all very kind to me and never gave me any trouble.”

Former CCCHS teacher Mr. Arden Alstatt wrote: “Dear class of 70, You were one of the best classes I encountered, I have many good memories with your class. I was a young pup then and full of energy…… I will not be able to be with you for your class celebration but hope you enjoy the time you have together. Thanks for thinking of me.”

Host and hostess for the evening’s entertainment were Pat Sa-Mike (Mike Kidwell) and Mar-Vanna (Martha Dorssom) for our version of Wheel of Trivia (without the wheel). Pat Sa-Mike began “Welcome to the 50th+1+1 Year Reunion of CCCHS Class of ’70 - TURNING 70. Mar-Vanna and I are here to challenge your gray matter (No, not your hair color) with some of the most difficult questions you’ve ever heard. It’s going to get exciting so you might want to go to the restroom now.” He went on to instruct the group to turn off their cell phones and not to use Google; there were a few who “pretended” to not hear the instructions.

Pat Sa-Mike and Mar-Vanna took turns reading the questions. Committee members assisted in identifying those who wished to convey their response. A correct answer was rewarded by a small candy bar being tossed in their direction. Questions ranged from facts and interesting details about CCCHS to events, movies, songs and sports during our high school years.

There were also two former CCCHS teachers that did attend part of the reunion on Saturday. We were happy to visit with Mrs. Jana (Sibley) Finkbiner and her es**rt Doug Erickson (brother-in-law and part of the CCCHS Class of 1971). Mrs. Finkbiner and Doug joined us in touring the halls of CCCHS.

Mr. Gary Unruh was the other former CCCHS teacher in attendance. He and his wife Nola still reside in Clay Center. So, some of us are fortunate to get to see them around town. I could see that Gary was enjoying seeing some of his former students. There were several comments made on the reunion photos posted on Face Book about how much students appreciated what Mr. Unruh had taught them.

“It takes a village” to orchestrate the “neatest and groovy” reunion. The reunion committee (Maribeth Wells Brown, Robyn Weimer Brown, Martha Valentine Dorssom, Mike Kidwell, Brad Logan, Tom Meek, Ron Roth, Judy Staley Stitt and Linda Spellman Cunningham) shopped local and was delighted with these businesses in our Clay Center village. Vintage Gardens Downtown (a beautiful venue, flexible scheduling and re-scheduling); Common Ground (perfect for our casual gathering); Gate 9 (high quality groovy T-shirts); Central Office Service & Supply (printed the 49 page directory and 18 page supplement); Vathauer Catering and Dieck’s Catering (both provided delicious food and great service); Cedar Court Motel (seemed to have a designated “Class of 1970” wing for classmates staying there); Clay County Historical Society and Museum (always willing to help locate and print whatever article or fact is requested and with a smile); Dollar General Store, Kier’s Thriftway, Ray’s Applemarket (supplies and food items); Post Office (patience when mailing 10 parcels with directories and or T-shirts to classmates who were unable to attend); Clay Center Community Improvement Foundation (provided “A Mural Movement Experience” flyers); and the genuine hospitality extended by the community.

I will close with the toast made to the Class of 1970 “50+1+1 years on” by Brad Logan (emcee for the evening). Brad prefaced the toast by noting how the audience contained all these young folk that might begin to show signs of age in the coming years. He recited from memory a passage from William Shakespeare’s play Henry V where the king is speaking to Katherine of Valois and promising her, romantically (though their marriage would be political, Henry V having conquered her father at the battle of Agincourt and now attempting to cement his rule over France) that though he would age in their relationship, he was of good heart. “A good leg will fall, a straight back will stoop, a black beard will turn white, a curled pate will go bald, a fair face will wither, a full eye will wax hollow, but a good heart is the sun and the moon, or rather the sun and not the moon for it shines bright and never changes but keeps its course truly. I toast the ‘good hearts’ of the Class of 1970”.
