The pandemic has been especially challenging for a lot of non-profit organizations, in part because many of them depend on revenue from in-person events. The Atlanta non-profit The Historic Oakland Foundation helps run the amazing Oakland Cemetery, and unfortunately this year the foundation has had to cancel almost all of their festivals and in-person cultural programming. For those who don’t live in Atlanta, Oakland Cemetery is an absolute treasure. It’s really more of a park than a cemetery, filled with Victorian gardens and amazing views of downtown. And, in a city that is known for doing a lousy job of preserving its own history and built environment, Oakland serves as a microcosm of the city’s history from the mid-19th century through today.

The foundation’s biggest annual event is the Capturing the Spirit of Oakland, held in the weeks that run up to Halloween. It’s more of a cerebral than scary event, as actors take on the roles of various people buried in the cemetery and provide funny and enlightening anecdotes about their lives. This year the foundation was prohibited by the city to hold the event because of crowd restrictions related to the pandemic. Still wanting to give people the Capturing the Spirit experience, the foundation asked us if we’d help them film it for the camera so they could offer it virtually. So here it is. I think it turned out pretty well. The foundation is offering it for sale for $15, and all the proceeds go towards the foundation’s effort to preserve, interpret, and share Oakland Cemetery and its history.
