The Club held a Social media awareness session tonight. We had an excellent educator, Rachael Kernaghan. There was an audience of 20+ across a wide spectrum of ages. Thankyou everyone for your support and input.
I've been very quiet on this page for the last while as I've had a lot of projects on the go that aren't actually related to child protection training.
As well as offering this sort of training I also offer the following services:
- peripatetic training services representing businesses and associations eg child protection, customer service etc
- business consulting services
- ISO 9001 consultancy
- ISO 14001 consultancy
- ISO 20000 consultancy
- project management of certification to other standards eg Safetcert (in conjunction with your health and safety and other experts)
- business strategy planning workshops
- business improvement workshops
- process mapping and creation
- internal audit function
In short my goal is to help you save time, and help your business run more efficiently by planning and managing strategic tasks that you just don't have time or resources to do yourself.
I'm going to apply to change this pages name to Process Solutions. Hopefully the info I post will still be of interest to you, and if I can help in any way please get in touch.
Thanks so much, Rachael.

One of our crews has been to a couple of incidents today regarding on line child protection issues.
The first was where a young child had their mobile number taken from an open Instagram account which was then used to communicate via WhatsApp asking her for indecent images. Thankfully very sensibly the child spoke to their parents and their school and the Instagram account privacy settings were adjusted and the WhatsApp caller blocked. I have seen many like this where initial contact can be innocent and friendly but quickly moves to a threatening nature.
The second was where a Snap Chat account again of a young child received a threatening message that if certain demands/images were not sent then they would share images on an online p**nography site. Again thankfully the child was aware enough to know that no such images existed and was able to block their account and talk with a parent. It would seem a few of these messages are going about and are quite likely a bulk delivery in the hope that one vulnerable young person will take the threats seriously and reply to the criminal.
Whilst these two calls were thankfully prevented from getting any worse I could share some really terrible tales from this area where young people have fallen prey to these criminals and found themselves in a really difficult position in who to turn to. The bottom line is that only when kids have somebody to turn to when they are feeling scared or vulnerable will they get the help they need. Below is some advice from Detective Inspector Gary McDonald of the PSNI’s Public Protection Branch in how to help if you have a child or feel you are in that difficult position yourself.
Don’t share personal information or images with people you don’t know.
Don’t accept a friend request from someone you don’t know - not everyone online is who they say they are.
Set privacy settings on all devices so that only people you know can view your account.
Don’t post anything online that you are not happy to be shared, particularly n**e or nearly n**e images or videos. It may seem like a bit of fun with friends at the time but there is always a chance those images could be shared or get into the wrong hands and could lead to harmful situations such as stalking, abuse or blackmail.
If someone has made you feel uncomfortable or you have had disturbing interaction online, tell police or a trusted adult. You can ring the police on 101 or for help and advice ring Childline on 0800 1111 or Lifeline on 0808 808 8000.
If you receive any inappropriate images or links, it is important that you do not forward it to anyone else. Contact police or tell a trusted adult immediately. By doing this you could help prevent further such incidents.
“For parents worried about their children using the internet, our advice is to become net-savvy. The best safeguard against online dangers is being informed. Learn the basics of the internet and find out more about social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat - read articles, take a class and talk to other parents. You don’t have to be an expert to have a handle on your child’s online world.
“But the most important thing is to have conversations with your children - talk to them about the benefits and dangers of the internet and social media - so that you can empower them to use both safely.
“Get to know what they’re interested in online and keep an eye on what they are doing. Find out what their favourite websites or social media platforms are and what online games they play.
“Don't be afraid to ask your children who they are talking to either online or on social media and what they are talking about. Remind them how important it is to tell a trusted adult if something happens online that makes them feel uncomfortable or worried.
