Our final workshop for GHS 2018 is... Artificial Intelligence: the new member of the healthcare team hosted by Andrey Petropavlovskiy!

Currently, we are witnessing a constantly expanding presence of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms in healthcare. The main goal of this workshop is to explore the potential impacts that the increasing influence of AI will have on how patients around the world receive their care and interact with healthcare professionals. Andrey will first speak on some key topics relating to the general principles of AI and use of AI in healthcare, then the participants will take part in a guided discussion. The discussion will be based around specific questions, proposed by the workshop leader, and will touch on the areas such as the impacts of AI on employment in healthcare, applications of machine learning algorithms to mental health and the use of AI for medical decision-making. The workshop will be concluded by the participants considering possible AI- based solutions to a real-life healthcare challenge by applying the information, learned during the discussion.

Introducing our last workshop leader... Andrey Petropavlovskiy!

Andrey is currently a second-year undergraduate student, studying genetics and biochemistry at Western University. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, he moved to British Columbia in 2013, and graduated from high school there, before relocating to London. His main area of interest lies in molecular biology research; however, he is also thrilled to be involved in the field of science and technology communication. Since last year, Andrey has been a writer for and a co-founder of a radio show “Sound of Science” on CHRW Radio Western. Every episode, this show explores a specific topic in science or technology, by placing it into the context of research done by Western’s own faculty and students, and attempts to bridge the gap between the researchers and the broader community. Besides that, Andrey had previously represented the province of British Columbia at VEX Robotics World Championship, and is fascinated by the impacts that artificial intelligence and automation will have on many areas of human life.

Stay tuned for his workshop!
