🩸 THE BLOOD COUNTESS 🩸

Elizabeth Báthory was a Hungarian noblewoman and alleged serial killer. The charges leveled against Báthory have been described by several historians as a witch-hunt. Other writers, such as Michael Farin in 1989, have said that the accusations against Báthory were supported by testimony from more than 300 individuals, some of whom described physical evidence and the presence of mutilated dead, dying and imprisoned girls found at the time of her arrest.

In a 2018 article for Przegląd Nauk Historycznych (Historical Science Review), Aleksandra Bartosiewicz suggested that the persecution of Báthory was a spectacle aimed at undermining her family's influence in the region. This was perceived as a threat to the political interests of her neighbors, including the Habsburg empire.

The tales surrounding Báthory swiftly became ingrained in national folklore. Legends depicting her vampiric tendencies, such as the belief that she bathed in the blood of virgins to maintain her youth, were predominantly recorded long after her death. Some assert a connection between Báthory and Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897), though Stoker's notes on the novel do not provide direct evidence supporting this theory. She is often referred to by nicknames and literary epithets such as The Blood Countess and Countess Dracula.

🩸 BLOODLETTING IN GEORGE WASHINGTON'S FINAL HOURS 🩸

As Washington's health declined, his aides and physicians resorted to desperate measures. George Rawlins, who was well practiced in the then popular art of bloodletting, decided to bleed Washington and removed a quarter of a litre of blood. Over the course of the day, various physicians drained almost two and a half litres of blood from Washington. This is approximately 40 percent of the total blood volume and in modern medicine would constitute hypovolaemic shock, an extremently dangerous, life-threatening condition that requires blood transfusion as treatment. Unsurprisingly, this did little to improve Washington’s condition, and he continued to deteriorate. The medical team were now becoming desperate, and they decided to perform even further bloodletting. After this additional bloodletting, they next administered an e***a, and then an emetic to make him vomit. This served to make Washington dehydrated, which in combination with his already severe degree of hypovolaemia, brought Washington ever closer to death’s door. The physician’s answer to his further deterioration, was even more bloodletting, which proved to be their final act, and later that afternoon the first U.S. president passed away aged 67.
