The WHO is having a homeschool conference on June 8th. These are some amazing speakers. If you are thinking about homeschooling, or want a refresher, I would recommend attending.

Details and registration here: https://washhomeschool.org/events/who-workshop-conference/ (see drop down menus for fuller descriptions, info on speakers, etc).
Any here I do not mean to cause a mad scramble, but we are limited this year on space (300, which is why members had first-dibs), so if you're planning to come, register soon.

In case I didn't meet you at the convention, I wanted to take a moment and introduce myself. As Teach the Children Homeschool Resource Center grows, I want everyone to know my heart behind this resource center and where I pray it will go in the future.

My name is Laura Battles. I've been homeschooling for 4 years (since 2020) when my oldest was in 1st grade. I now homeschool a 4th, 2nd and kindergartner, all independently. I say that because we started with our local public school option at Homelink (parent partnership). In December 2022, we left Homelink, joined a local co-op at our church and became completely independent. Personally, one of the best decisions I ever made.

The thing I kept running into when I went independent was being able to preview curricula options before buying. I wanted to try something new. However, I didn't want to spend the money, only to find out it wasn't a right fit for us...so I never left what we were using (it isn't bad just doesn't always fit us to a 'T').

I prayed for a long time to open a bookstore in the South Eastern part of Washington. Before long, one door after another opened for me to host a curricula convention and thus blossomed the 2024 Teach the Children Convention.

I would love to see Teach the Children Homeschool Resource Center become a resource for all things homeschool. Connect families with families who have been where you currently are, connect families with resources in our local (and global) area, connect families with curricula so they can see before purchasing and be a place where you can freely ask questions and get the answers you need.

As 2024 progresses, I plan on hosting numerous events and speakers. If you want to hear from someone or want to be connected with a local resource, please reach out to me. I'll try my best to connect you.

From my family to yours
- Laura Battles, Director of Teach the Children Homeschool Resource Center

Everyone has been asking for something like this so here it is.

A list of local co-ops, homeschool groups, meet-ups, etc. for the Tri-City area. If your co-op/group/school isn't on the list, please reach out to me so we can add it.

And please pass it around. Let's be a community that supports and uplifts one another.

FYI!

When you enroll for Running Start funding, you have to do all the things:

1. You need to enroll at the highschool school (this is because when they wrote the law for the funding, we were a bit of an after thought. This step allows the state to pay the school, it does *not* obligate your Kidlet to take classes at the highschool or to seek a diploma there).

2. You need to file your Declaration of Intent (this is so that #1 doesn't turn you into a diploma-seeking public school student, and you remain a homeschooler).

3. You need to enroll at the college (this is the registration for classes). (This step may or may not include placement testing, as RS funding only covers college level coursework).

4. You'll return each quarter to the highschool for the RS Enrollment Verification Form to take to the college to "pay" for the tuition.

Other useful notes:

Running Start Eligibility is based on being a highschool junior or senior. It's not based on age. However, if you are outside the "16-17 junior" and "17-18 senior," age range, you should be prepared to defend that status with documentation.

Running Start is just a funding program and is not a separate set of classes. Your student will be doing adult level work with adults in a setting that tackles adult topics, so part of the calculus here is not only if your student is academically prepared, but also if they are mature enough for college level work.

Warmly,
~Jen
