Cape Cod Morning by Edward Hopper c. 1950 courtesy Smithsonian American Art Museum Location: 1st Floor South Wing.

As a painter, Hopper was a realist. One of his influences was Winslow Homer. The idea of the open narrative that is left up to the viewer, specifically a woman looking at something that we don’t see, was also one of Homer’s favorite themes. It only seems natural that Hopper would define Americana for so many.

Nothing seems to fit quite right in “Cape Cod Morning,” by Edward Hopper. There is not a clear narrative, so the viewer needs to imagine their own story as to what is going on. Hopper often created spaces, or spheres of influence that contrast with each other. Examples of this include the civilized world vs. nature, or indoors vs. outdoors. Here, the woman almost exists in a space between two worlds. The shutters on the window look like immovable bars that secure her, and her surroundings to a static spot. The way Hopper sets the bay window in shadow allows us to question if she belongs in either space outside of her “cell.” While the woods are dense, and impenetrable, they are neat, and tidy. The grass is tall, but the colors are warm. The trees line up in order, it is the thickness, and breadth of the forest allows them to become the unknown. Hopper connects the interior space of the window to both the house, and the woods with color. The shades are a similar hue to the lightest trees in the forest. The red in the woman’s dress is repeated in the base of the house, as well as a highlight in the grass. The color of the room, lampshade, and woman’s hair is echoed in the grass as well. He cuts the painting almost in half between the house, and the yard/forest. Hopper leaves the viewer to wonder if she is leaning forward in trepidation or is it longing to break free.
