In 1597, in Rome, Annibale Carracci began the decoration of the gallery of Palazzo Farnese: twenty meters long, six meters wide, barrel-vaulted. Around the central representation of Bacchus and Ariadne, between fake herms and caryatids, mythological fables allude to the classic and naturalistic theme of the triumph of Love.
Annibale's program, supported by the trends of the most advanced Roman culture, is the integral revaluation of classical culture and the Renaissance: the reference to Michelangiolo and Raphael, at the time of the Sistine Chapel and that of the Farnesina, was therefore inevitable.

After the victory achieved by Aureliano's army over the barbarians who had pushed as far as the Metauro river, the emperor, considering the state of complete defenselessness of Rome, undertook in the 271 AD the construction of new walls that included the whole inhabited area. As the danger of new barbarian raids was imminent, the works were carried out
with the utmost speed. The course of the walls was established according to a strategic plan. An area of land was expropriated, including the buildings contained in there. These were partly demolished, partly incorporated into the walls themselves, saving time and work. The Aurelian Walls have a circumference of almost 19km, and an average width of 4m. This colossal work, begun by Aureliano in the 271 AD, was completed by the Emperor Probus. The haste with which the Aurelian Walls had been built caused a rapid deterioration, so that, due to the pressing need to defend Rome increasingly threatened by barbarian raids, the Emperors Arcadius and Honorius, in 403, ordered a major restoration.

On March 6th, 1575 Michelangelo was born in Caprese.
Here we see a detail of the Last Judgment, in which Michelangelo portrays himself in the empty skin of San Bartolomeo. So much time, so much work, so much passion he put into his art that he felt emptied by it.

The Pantheon is the greatest memory that Rome retains intact from the Imperial times. A few weeks ago and I had the immense luck of being there on our own.
