Studio Enki

Studio Enki

Functional ceramics made with love. Studio Enki is the workshop of Nicholas Hannah, in Bellingen, NSW.

This little town where the river flows into the ocean is a place of extraordinary natural beauty and a source of constant inspiration. I incorporate local natural materials into my work, looking to express the wildness that exists in the places I collect my clay. All my work is dishwasher and microwave safe, and designed to be used and enjoyed daily.

Settling in to a new life, a new world

Timeline photos 25/07/2020

Many things drift and change in this life, but the joy of making is unshakeable.

When was the last time you made something with your hands?

Timeline photos 22/07/2020

It's been a long time, friends. I've been working on a few things, clay and otherwise. Trees have been speaking to me lately.

There is beauty everywhere when you know how to look.

I hope you have been taking care of yourself, and the people around you. x

On whiteness:

I apologise for my actions, conscious and unconscious, which have caused harm. I acknowledge that my privilege is a consequence of imperialism and genocide. I acknowledge that I do not know even how to begin making reparations, but I can start with listening and learning.

I acknowledge that a life lived on stolen land can never be whole. I acknowledge with deep shame that we have voted in another racist and genocidal government. Revolutionary action is justified when those in power are unjust. I acknowledge that that path to justice is long and white people everywhere will need to make changes in order to make space for a diverse and healthy culture.

May we all stand together, and listen to the words of those who need to speak.

May we build a world where no person lives in fear of any other.

Eat Clay Love is tomorrow and the tickets have sold out! I am seriously excited to be hosting this event with and special guest Simha Koether .

In truth, I try to avoid the "I'm so excited" voice on instagram, because we have all too much of it in this social media saturated world, but in this instance it is appropriate. Of course like every adventure into new territory it is by turns exciting and terrifying, but things have come together in a beautiful way now. Mostly I feel a deep joy of knowing we will get to share something meaningful tomorrow, with great food and compelling conversation.

There will be more of this to come. A bringing together of the things that are important and meaningful in this little life of mine. Food, art, people and conversation. The clay journey is a long and winding one, and anyone who is on that path will know what I mean when I say it isn't easy, but they will surely also understand the unquenchable urge to keep going, to dig into the clay, to listen to the earth and hear what it has to say. Clay has opened me up in ways I would never have imagined, and I look forward to sharing some of that tomorrow evening.

From November we're planning on making this a monthly event, so if you missed out this time, see you at the next one. x

Always playing with slight variations in clay and glaze. With just a few basic materials you can create a huge range of variation just experimenting with combinations. Letting accident and intuition into the studio, informed by whatever technical knowledge I've acquired over the years. ⠀

Women became the official property of men at least 4000 years ago, when the code of Hammurabi was chiselled into stone, but we can easily imagine that a similar social system existed well before that. ⠀
In Australia women were given the right to vote in 1908. 4000 of sitting silent in the democratic process, and now in living memory there is a change for the better. My grandmother hardly had a choice over whether she cleaned the house or followed her dreams. And here we are, in our own lifetime, smashing down centuries & millennia of systematised oppression of women. There is still so much to be done, but it's worth stopping for a second to consider how monumental this is.⠀
It is the great shame of mankind that our mothers, daughters, and lovers should be treated like this. It will take lifetimes to undo the damage that has been done, to roll back the entrenched disparity between us.⠀
But now, in this moment, thanks to the free sharing of information, the ability to build communities that operate outside established channels, and a slowly growing global social conscience, we are doing that work.⠀
It is hard to celebrate what is at heart simply the undoing of a great crime, but victories must be celebrated wherever they occur, to give strength to the movement. The forward momentum must be maintained. There will be no peace on earth until every gender has an equal place. ⠀
The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.⠀
Please, friends, if ever an opportunity arises that I can be a better man and make changes to move towards true equality, tell me. Tell me and tell every man you know.

Some days it is hard to let the light shine in. But it is there, every day, waiting for us. In the soil and in the sky there is the love that we are all seeking. Today it was hiding in the smell of a carrot pulled fresh from the earth. Where will it be tomorrow?

Pondering the connection between clay and meditation practice. Each informs the other. The two anchors of my life, the touchstones I am always returning to. There is a feeling that some upcoming body of work must address this connection. The dialogue between one and the other, the free flow of ideas, the way both practices speak to direct lived experience.⠀

Earth, the body, spirit, the moon. There is much to ponder.⠀⠀⠀⠀

And old pot that keeps revealing new faces. Clay I dug and took straight from the ground to the wheel, full of rocks and sand and life. Throwing clay like this is wonderful because the coarse material starts to rip the bowl apart if you overwork it. The clay tells you when you are done, and you just need to learn to listen.⠀
⠀
Working with clay is always a balancing act between what you want and what they clay knows it must do, but it is never more apparent than when dancing with wild clay like this.⠀
⠀
A dry, responsive feldspathic glaze, put through a wood firing yields a surface that speaks of the life the clay lived before I took it from the earth.⠀⠀⠀⠀
