Honoring the eight innocent lives lost and the survivors of the Atlanta spa shootings two years ago today. Despite the tragedy, our communities came together in a powerful and meaningful way. We were reminded of the importance of standing against hate and discrimination, and inspired to create a more respectful and equitable world. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones impacted by this tragedy. Let's continue to work towards that vision, honoring the memory of those we lost.

LYNX NGUYEN

ARTIST BIO
LYNX was born in D**g Thap, Vietnam in 1985. LYNX and his family moved to the United States in 1993 to escape persecution from the communist regime. As a young boy growing up in the Communist Country of Vietnam, LYNX experienced fear and hardship, and one way to find mental comfort was to take refuge in the teaching of the Enlightened Saints. LYNX graduated from Georgia State University in 2011 with a BFA in Studio Art with an interest in Eastern philosophy and religion. In 2015, LYNX earned his MFA in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design, which he focuses most of his effort on drawing, especially marks making, as a tool for self-discipline.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Each day, I make one million tally marks with ballpoint pen on paper or canvas as an act of self-discipline. One way to accomplish this task is by attaching a ballpoint pen to an electric drill and sitting as long as sixteen hours to do a drawing. Each tally mark represents a breath. When one takes a breath, one is alive. So, discipline is a matter of focusing on how to make each breath count. The goal is to master one’s emotions, first to make peace with oneself, then, hopefully, to extend this realization to others.

The film captures the aftermath of the 2021 mass shootings in Atlanta and how the Asian American community came together to fight hate; the struggles and triumphs of the AAPI community.
그간 아태계 지역사회 구성원들이 겪어온 차별 및 혐오범죄의 급증 실태를 진단하며, 애틀랜타 총격사건과 지역 사회의 대응이 사회에 미친 영향에 대해 심층적으로 보도합니다. 배우 산드라 오가 나레이션을 맡았으며, 애틀랜타 지역 사회의 구성원들이 출연합니다. 정권의 역활과 대응 또한 다뤄지면서 특정 정당이 조명되기는 하나, 다가오는 중간 선거에 영향을 줄수 있는 의도적 관계는 없음을 이번 프로젝트에 참여한 구성원으로서 알려드립니다.

Once again, we remember the victims, the families, and the survivors dealing with loss, recognizing the lasting consequences of the March 16 shootings on individual lives. Although there is so much to be done, we are proud to work alongside leaders and community members who work tirelessly to bring awareness and fight hate. The record of the historical events reflects the personal, social, political, and economic points of view of the participants and society's interpretation. For that, We are very grateful to Director Gina Kim, Director T**i Yu, and their team, who made this meaningful project possible.

We honored those individuals we lost on March 16, the one year anniversary of the Atlanta Spa Shootings. We also lost Michelle Go, Christina Yuna Lee, and GuiYing Ma to senseless killings. The violence against Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) continue to rise, According to Stop AAPI Hate, "AAPI Women Report More Harassment in Public Spaces."
Using 10,152 hate incidents with information about gender (93.1% of all hate incidents), we provide the gender-specific descriptions of hate incidents for AAPI women, AAPI men, and AAPI non-binary people. Non- binary people include individuals who self-identified as gender nonbinary and gender nonconforming. Overall findings:

-AAPI women report more harassment than AAPI men and AAPI non-binary people
-AAPI non-binary people report more deliberate avoidance or shunning, being coughed at or spat on, denial of service, and online harassment than AAPI women and men.
-A higher percentage of hate incidents experienced by AAPI women occurred in public streets compared to AAPI men and AAPI non-binary people.
-Higher percentages of AAPI women and AAPI non-binary people identified gender/gender identity as one reason for discrimination compared to AAPI men.
It’s time to unite, be in solidarity and create a movement together.
