Yoga Improves Memory and Brain Function in Older Adults, Study Finds Yoga research studies show positive effects of yoga on brain function, improved memory, and other mental and physical benefits.
This is an incredibly valuable question to ask yourself, since we know that when the brain and nervous system don't feel safe, pain signals fire. š„
It may take some time to find answers to this question. Don't be afraid to really examine things that make you feel stressed or uncomfortable ā emotions can be perceived as "dangerous" to your nervous system, especially if you think they are "bad" or avoid feeling them.
Here are some common parts of daily life that can make people feel unsafe:
- movement
- perfectionism or fear of failure
- not feeling good enough
- a harsh inner critic
- repressing uncomfortable emotions
- tough relationships or familial conflict
- focusing on pain or symptoms
- anxiety/worry
- trauma triggers
Feel free to share if you relate to anything from these examples, or if there is something else you have identified in your daily life that makes you feel unsafe. It may help someone else who can relate!
Self compassion as a way to structure safety for holding authenticity.

There is so much exciting research in the field of yoga therapy. This recent study shows that:
"yoga is equally as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety in older adults. Participants showed lasting improvement in anxiety symptoms, even 6 months after stopping either therapy.
Offering a choice between CBT and yoga may help more people get the support they need. In fact, in this study more people chose yoga than CBT."
The study, published in The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry September 2022 issue, included 500 participants equally divided in two parts: a randomized controlled trial (RCT) and a preference trial. The participants were 60 years of age or older, and the study took place over 10 weeks.
At 11 weeks all participants showed significant improvement in anxiety and worry. At 37 weeks, approximately 6 months after both interventions ended, not only did participants still show improvement from when they started, but they showed additional clinically meaningful improvement.
Carmen Andreescu, MD, noted that, āthe persistent perception of anxiety symptoms as a relatively mild group of . . . symptoms with no relevant impact beyond decreased quality of life continues to persist in the medical community.ā Dr. Andreescu countered this misperception with multiple studies to the contrary that demonstrate the dire consequences of unaddressed anxiety in older adults. In psychotherapy CBT is considered the gold standard by many, which makes this finding regarding the efficacy of yoga powerful and promising.
