“My dream has always been to show people the magic of dance!”- Vix
Dance is therapy, it heals, it beats, it breathes life into our bones, our minds and our future. The magic of conscious dance has proved to be therapeutic in nature over centuries of practice and is today an extraordinary healing space. Dance encompasses movement of emotions and imagination working together in a combination of innocence and beauty allowing the mind to stop and allows the soul to reveal itself.

Self regulation is a skill learned from a very young age! Movement and rhythm can encourage self regulation at any age but check out this brilliant study done on 3-4 year olds!
This recent study investigated the effectiveness of a rhythm and movement intervention delivered by teachers in improving the skills in children aged 3-4 years. The study found that this intervention improved children's ability to self-regulate and demonstrated the value of training teachers to support children through the use of a school programme.

♥️ dance is therapy ♥️
Gillian is a seven-year-old girl who cannot sit in school.
She continually gets up, gets distracted, flies with thoughts, and doesn't follow lessons.
Her teachers worry about her, punish her, scold her, reward the few times that she is attentive, but nothing.
Gillian does not know how to sit and cannot be attentive.
When she comes home, her mother punishes her too.
So not only does she Gillian have bad grades and punishment at school, but she also suffers from them at home.
One day, Gillian's mother is called to school.
The lady, sad as someone waiting for bad news, takes her hand and goes to the interview room.
The teachers speak of illness, of an obvious disorder.
Maybe it's hyperactivity or maybe she needs a medication.
During the interview an old teacher arrives who knows the little girl.
He asks all the adults, mother and colleagues, to follow him into an adjoining room from where she can still be seen.
As he leaves, he tells Gillian that they will be back soon and turns on an old radio with music.
As the girl is alone in the room, she immediately gets up and begins to move up and down chasing the music in the air with her feet and her heart.
The teacher smiles as the colleagues and the mother look at him between confusion and compassion, as is often done with the old.
So he says: "See? Gillian is not sick, Gillian is a dancer!"
He recommends that her mother take her to a dance class and that her colleagues make her dance from time to time.
She attends her first lesson and when she gets home she tells her mother: "Everyone is like me, no one can sit there!"
In 1981, after a career as a dancer, opening her own dance academy and receiving international recognition for her art, Gillian Lynne became the choreographer of the musical "Cats."
Hopefully, all “different” children find adults capable of welcoming them for who they are and not for what they lack.
Long live the differences, the little black sheep and the misunderstood.
They are the ones who create beauty in this world

Fact vs Fiction
People hear ‘Dance Movement Psychotherapy’ (DMP) and assume routines are learned, postures are practiced and a performance is the end result…. This clearly emphasizes the word “DANCE” and sure these practices are welcome if that’s what’s needed in your therapeutic intervention 🩰(someone with low self esteem or the need to be seen and many more scenarios.)
However, I have news for you! DMP often has no form of dance whatsoever! I like to explain this therapy as emphasizing the ‘DANCE’ of life! Everything in life has rhythm, has movement, has flow. DMP believes that all things in life are embodied and through movement a direct link is made between body and brain. To help you understand this better - close your eyes and picture eating a slice of lemon. 🍋 Notice what happened to your body when your brain gave it a message. Did your jaw clench? Perhaps a memory of tequilla when the boks won this weekend 🇿🇦😉 Anyway that was your brain signaling your body response!
So what is DMP then?
DMP is a Psychotherapy that focuses on body language and non verbal expression over and above spoken language. Verbal capacity is a privilege not a requirement of this therapy. DMP encourages us to change embodied patterns in order to shift our neural pathways in the brain, which in turn will ripple out into meaningful life changes. Change in body = change in mindset = deepened meaning and purpose in one’s life.

The Baby Rave is a music and dance event specifically designed for babies and their parents. The idea behind it is to encourage one- on-one bonding time that is stimulating for both parent and baby. 🎶💞
The Baby Rave Club is a safe baby proofed venue with lots of fun and exciting sensory play props and development specific equipment. ✨💫The music is often played at a lower volume due to the lack of nursery rhymes and instead rather encouraging baseline. 🔊👯♀️🪩
These classes are fun and upbeat, leaving you with all the benefits of a good workout while putting aside special time to bond with your baby 💪🥳🎈

Although movement therapy is not only for children, it is extremely effective for children due to its creative nature. In my experience children with emotional distress, challenging behavior and learning difficulties can benefit greatly from the freedom of expression this therapy allows.
I do not have much room left in the afternoons as I too have a baby of my own. But please do get in touch if this might be something for your or your little one.
