All souls Day.
The day after Samhain is all souls day.
Ireland is steeped In tradition, some we still do. It's believed the veil is thin between the living & the deceased today.
In Ireland it was believed that the souls of family members would return home on all soul's night.
Great care was taken to welcome home the souls. The house was cleaned, the fire was lit & the poker & thongs were placed in the shape of a cross on the heart.
The table was set for each departed family member with a bowl of spring water & a bowl of salt water to represent the meals we made for them.
Children would knock on doors begging for cakes in exchange for prayers. This was called soul caking.
Families would visit the graves & place a candle on each grave. A candle was also placed in the window to guide our loved ones home & the door was left unlatched.
It's believed the ancestors would come & give the gift of remembering old days & old ways & a reminder how we are linked by blood.
There was great respect for our ancestors & the wisdom they could give us on all soul's day.
