It’s Publication Day! Here’s the Story . . . Nine Women Write Their Lives, edited by Andrea Simon, is a compilation of the writing that emerged from an online course called “Writing about Your Mom without Guilt,” for the Story Circle Network. Not ready to end their special bond, nine writers continued to meet and share their writing after the course ended. The result is this anthology of forty-two pieces: essays, stories, and poems.

The authors are: Amy Baruch, Stephanie Cowell, Linda Aronovsky Cox, Karen Finch, Jane Mylum Gardner, Rhonda Hunt-Del Bene, Katherine Kirkpatrick, Kathleen M. Rodgers, and Andrea Simon.

“Surprising, provocative, exciting, this collection brings together a group of writers whose wisdom shines through . . . the nine authors’ work will draw you in, envelop you, and make you want to keep reading until the end.” —Deborah Kalb, author of the novel Off to Join the Circus

Author Platform Follows the Work | Jane Friedman 27/02/2024

"Too often author platform gets equated to being on social media. It’s more about relationships, being visible to others in your category/genre, and having connections with people who are a little further ahead of you in the game. For most authors, social media numbers are a /result/ of these relationships or broader community engagement.

Agents/publishers are part of the problem here, of course, when they tell authors to build a social media following. They might use social media numbers as a shortcut to determine if you have market credibility or relationships to help support book sales. But if authors consequently decide to focus on “building a social media following,” it may feel ridiculous and divorced from the work. And that's because usually it is!

My thanks to guest Mirella Stoyanova for being quite vulnerable in this post today."

Author Platform Follows the Work | Jane Friedman One author threw herself into platform building and engagement, only to lose sight of what really mattered—her writing.

The Sisters Z 18/02/2024

THE REVIEWS KEEP COMING IN.
Thank you to the Storybook Lady for this wonderful review of The Sisters Z, which I wrote with Deborah Bodin Cohen, published by Bedazzled Ink Publishing Company, illustrated by Lena Tohoff. The review is also featured in Goodreads.
"Who knew? There is a feminist bible story. When orphaned, daughters of Zelophehad did not wish to be split up and they stayed together . When the Israelites reached Canaan, all male heads of family were to be allotted land. By law, if he were to die, then the first born son would inherit the land. But with no men in the family, the girls would not be given a parcel of land for a home of their own. These girls sought out Moses and convinced him to give them land even though they were female. This atypical bible story is a fine example of women's rights. It is a bible story that explores the concept of fair treatment to all. The characters were cute and clever and the illustrations were adorable. I recommend this story for any youngster."

THE INDIAN AUNTY GOES WILD!

I'm delighted to share that an author interview with me has been featured in the wonderful Coffee and Conversations magazine, which has showcased conversations with eminent authors such as Alka Joshi, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni and Nadia Hashimi. I'm over the moon to have an interview by me included in the same publication as these fabulous authors and sincerely hope you will read it.

In the interview, I discuss the spark that ignited my novel "Woman of An Uncertain Age," an unconventional midlife 'coming-of-age' story portraying an Indian woman's bold decision to leave the suburban town and Indian community she'd been a part of for over thirty years. After being suddenly widowed in her fifties, Naina Mehta, the protagonist of the book and an “aunty” in South Asian parlance, embarks on an independent new life by moving to New York City and determinedly securing a position in the lower rungs of the art world. At the same time, she does what no good mother is ever supposed to in any culture - she unexpectedly falls for her grown daughter's boyfriend. Matters become thorny and turbulent in ways you will have to read the novel to discover. Much later in the novel, Naina gets involved with a Pakistani Muslim man, creating a whole other set of complications.

The questions posed by Shikha Lamba, the co-editor of Coffee and Conversations magazine, were incredibly thought-provoking and astute and had me delving deep into the historical and contemporary portrayals of audacious, rule-breaking women in fiction. They got me thinking further about why we need more flawed, authentic women in literature who are neither just tragic victims, divine angels, or damsels in distress, nor femme fatales, cunning witches, or hysterical harpies.

And, as might be expected, I talked about how middle-aged and older women, who have historically been relegated to peripheral, stereotypical caricatures such as the sad spinster, matronly matchmaker aunty, or the senile grandmother in fiction, are starting to make headway as adventurous, active, and passionate trailblazers whose narratives reflect their vibrant and full lives. Case in point: Naina Mehta of 'Woman of An Uncertain Age,' who refuses to be dumped into the dowdy doldrums of Auntydom!

I hope you enjoy the interview. I’m most grateful to Coffee and Conversations co-editor Shikha Lamba (who also happens to be a beautiful human being, a talented poet, and an avid reader) for giving me this wonderful forum to express my thoughts and ideas.

Finally, for readers in India, “Woman of An Uncertain Age” is available on Amazon Kindle India for just Rs. 250 for a short while!
