The human fascination with urban dwelling and its associated comforts and accoutrements is distancing the human soul from everything that matters - nature itself.

CONGRATULATIONS to Collections on Sustainable Sands.

Meet my new 'Baby'. For years I've been looking for a sustainable solution for all the glass we Refuse Collection Services receive.

The process of exporting glass cullet is dangerous to process, cumbersome, offers very low return and not very many transporters will haul the 30 odd tonne bags of smashed up glass all the way to Joburg!

After some reading up and chatting to folk I came up with...sand! And then...what to do with the sand? And then...by way of much technical assistance from a reputable pool builder and pool maintenance expert... pool filter sand replacement!

I've often lamented the sometimes unethical extraction of sand for both the pool and building industryies and wondered how we could mitigate this. So I made my own plan - Sustainable Sands 😌

Glass media for pool filters has so many advantages over traditional sand...you put less in the filter; it's sterile and so reduces the bacteria in the filter; it lasts longer - much longer!; less water is required to backwash the filter; chlorine requirements are reduced; it filters smaller particles so a clearer water quality is achieved and most importantly, it's made from 100% recycled glass and has no discernable negative impact on the environment!

There are so many applications...most beyond my knowledge or imagination...that I feel glass media will pop up in many conversations. I look forward to being a part of these conversations.
