Yulin Robins, the brand, is an impression of artwork which tell the stories of daily tribal life. Integrating aboriginal to fashion.
Artist turned fashion designer Yulin Robins began painting in 1997, before embarking on her professional career in 2003. She is known for her indigenous inspired artwork using vivid colours and intricate detail. Her story began with an accidental encounter with tribal art during a family holiday in Bali; there she devoted much time to acquire drawing and painting techniques before refining it to b
ecome her own. Her fascination with history and culture is translated into her work and is often the subject – an illustration of the modest daily life of the locals. Taking the essence of her five-layer painting technique; starting from pencil sketch, to Balinese bamboo fountain pen, to Chinese calligraphy brush strokes, followed by acrylic colours, and finally perfected with oil painting – the construction of the garments also embody a 5-step process formed by dying, layering, and such. Each piece reflects the style of the tribe, which can be seen from the colours used from natural dyes to the weave which create the signature geometric patterns. Created to preserve and reinvent tribal art in the form of fashion, the Cruise / Resort season collection repurposes history in a modern and relevant way – making Yulin Robins a highly anticipated debut in the art movement of South East Asia.
