Sea Cadets Hastings
The Aim of the Sea Cadet Corps is to give young people the best possible head start in life through nautical adventure and fun
Sea Cadets is the UK’s largest maritime youth charity. 9000 volunteers support 14,000 young people (between 10 and 18) in 400 towns across the UK. Through nautical adventure they learn vital life skills like leadership, communication and team working and can earn extra qualifications which help boost confidence to give them a head start in life.
It is with deepest sadness to have to advise of the passing of Lt Cdr (SCC) John D Chinn RNR. Monday 19-Aug-2024
Lt Cdr Chinn, born 01-May-1943, joined Shooters Hill School Sea Cadet Unit, London Area aged 12 years old. In 1965 he gained his Petty Officer and by 1971 was commissioned Sub-Lieutenant (SCC) RNR, advancing to Lieutenant (SCC) RNR in 1973.
In 1977, Lt Cdr Chinn, moved to Sussex and joined TS Rye and District Sea Cadets, under the command of Lt Cdr (SCC) John Whiteman RNR, Grand-Father of the current Commanding Officer and Lt Cdr Chinn’s God-Son Petty Officer (SCC) Philip Whiteman.
In 1982, Lt Cdr Chinn transferred to TS Hastings SCC as Commanding Officer until 1986, before moving on to be part of the Sussex District Team, to return two more times to TS Hastings to hold Command 1994-1995 and again for 1998. During which time, he continued in his role as District Officer Sussex, until standing down as Deputy District Officer in 2003, a position he has held to date, receiving the coveted Sea Cadet Medal in 2015 for 50 years service.
Lt Cdr Chinn will be very sorely missed by us all, and our thoughts are with his personal and all his Sea Cadet Family, at this sad time.
Stand down Sir and Thank you for all you have given each and every one of us.
Rest Peacefully Sir.
Award of long service clasp and coronation medal to John Lt Cdr (SCC) John Chinn, former commanding officer of Hastings Sea Cadets and District Officer for Sussex Sea Cadets, was this week presented with both his coronation medal and a very rare 7th clasp for his cadet forces adult volunteer medal.
It is with great sadness to advise CPO Henry Campbell of Sea Cadets Hastings crossed the bar today, Monday 15-Apr-2024.
Henry was very well loved amongst all across Sussex Sea Cadets serving from the 1986 until 2002 and could be fondly seen continuing to attend Annual Parades and Civic events for many years, thereafter.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his son Simon and his daughter Helen.
Happy Easter from all at TS Hastings
We have received reports of Portuguese man o' war washing up on local beaches.
They are deep blue/ purple in colour and have an air filled ‘sack’ which floats on the surface of the water. It is important not to touch them, as stings can be very painful and in rare cases potentially fatal.
If you do get stung, follow the advice on the NHS website: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/jellyfish-and-other-sea-creature-stings/

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.
Lord Lieutenant Award for Meritorious service were instituted in order to afford public recognition to those members of the reserve and cadet forces whose efforts are not recognised by the twice yearly Honours lists. The Lord Lieutenant’s award thus ranks second to the King’s Honours lists. The process for submissions for the award is based on the military system for Honours and Awards.
Congratulations to Sgt Andy Gooch on receiving your award yesterday evening. It was an honour to be there to watch you, very well deserved Sergeant 🤪
Bz!

Dear Friend of T.S Hastings,
Please find enclosed a copy of the notice of the Unit AGM which we are due to hold on the 20th October 2023.
We have chosen to hold the meeting on a normal parade night again. We have deliberately done this to encourage cadet parents to attend and for other voting members to get the opportunity to see the unit busy with training.
I hope that you will be able to join us.
Kind Regards
David Fletcher

‘Last’ Royal Navy veteran of Dunkirk dies aged 102 | ITV News Lawrence Churcher was awarded the Legion d’Honneur and later became Portsmouth FC's oldest fan | ITV News Meridian
It is farewell, sadly, to another D-Day hero – Welshman and proud veteran of 41 Commando Royal Marines, Ted Owens.
Ted, who has died aged 98, was wounded three times in five months - twice seriously, including on D-Day itself – as he helped liberate France, Belgium and the Netherlands in the summer and autumn of 1944.

As you may know, we had to make the decision to cancel our Summer Fete at the weekend due to a yellow weather warning in place for high winds. We were devastated to cancel after all of the hard work that had gone into it, and with the support of so many local businesses and organisations, but we simply couldn't ignore the weather warning that was in place. It was due to be our biggest fundraiser for the year, so it's incredibly disappointing to cancel.
Thankfully, our Grand Raffle will still proceed, albeit on the later date of Saturday 22nd July at 3pm. Thank you so much to all of those who donated prizes to our raffle, and to Garage On The Green for sponsoring the top prize and Marshall-Tufflex Ltd for sponsoring the second prize. We'll be doing a Facebook Live stream of the draw. There is still time to purchase tickets in The Friends Shop, or online at EventBrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/friends-of-conquest-grand-summer-raffle-tickets-638680760347
Another way members of the public can help us raise the funds this event would have done is to consider becoming a member of The Friends. For £12 per year you would be supporting your local hospital, you'd receive monthly updates from us as well as priority tickets for some of our events. To sign up, go to:
https://conquestfriends.co.uk/join-us/
Another huge thank you to all of those that supported and helped with our event in spite of the cancellation, including sponsors Bartletts SEAT, Drallim, The Blackford Group, 1066 Bakery, plus many organisations that kindly offered us great deals and the loan of equipment such as Butchers Hook, Coleman’s ABC, Helenswood Sports Centre, Rother Valley Brewery, Eldridges Animal Feeds, Flamingo Amusements, Kids Stuff Hastings, Intouch - Fresh Visions, Lloyds Bank Hastings, The Comet pub st leonards on sea, Jewsons, Meridian Toilet Hire, Markwick Gardens, Northiam Bonfire Society, Sea Cadets Hastings, The Nearly on the Beach Concert, Hastings Beer & Music Festival, plus all of our entertainers Conquest Hospital Community Radio, 1066 Wing Chun Schools, Acromax Gymnastics Club, Seaside Stu, Hastings Coastal Twirlers, Love Vocals, Hastings Old Town Ukulele Group, Hannah's Cat Morris, Helen Tozer Storyteller and Heros for hire and princess for party's. We had an incredible 50+ volunteers due to help us with the event, and we are so grateful that they were willing to give up their time to support us.
This we’d like to take the opportunity to express our gratitude to all our brilliant Sea Cadets volunteers. Thank you for sharing your time to inspire the next generation!

Many congratulations to 36 men and women across the Royal Navy who have been singled out for recognition in the King’s first Official Birthday Honours.🎉
From engineers who have played key roles in the Type 45 flotilla or Gibraltar Squadron, to sailors who have laid the foundation for global operations by River class patrol ships, all those rewarded have gone above and beyond the regular call of duty to support RN operations.
