ATTENTION: The City of Norton announced Thursday it will issue a citywide burn ban effective 12:01 a.m. this Friday, Nov. 10. The burn ban will be in effect until further notice.

Dry conditions throughout the month of October and unseasonably high temperatures have caused grasslands and woodlands to be extremely dry, creating a severe fire risk throughout the City of Norton. Uncontrolled open fire poses a serious threat to life and property while the current dry conditions exist.

The announcement bans all open-air burning in the City of Norton until further notice. It prohibits any person to set fire to, or procure another to set fire to any woods, brush, logs, leaves, grass, debris, or other flammable material within the boundaries of the City of Norton until the fire risk is reduced.

Questions about the burn ban should be directed to the Norton Police Department, (276) 679-1212.

Also visit the Virginia Department of Forestry’s website (https://dof.virginia.gov/wildland-prescribed-fire/fire-danger/daily-fire-danger-rating/) for daily fire danger rating updates.

This past Sunday in Emmitsburg, Maryland, at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial, one of our local heroes, James Allen Sturgill of Pound Fire Department was honored for his sacrifice to his community. James passed away on September 12, 2021 due to complications of Covid-19 likely as a result of his work as a volunteer firefighter.
From the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Honor Roll
“James Allen Sturgill was born in Johnson City, Tennessee, on June 11, 1982, to Moe and Lois Sturgill. Born eight weeks early and only weighing around two pounds, James was a fighter from the word go. James attended Wise Primary, LF Addington, and graduated from JJ Kelly High School, Class of 2000.
James met his wife, Susan, on December 15, 2001, and they were married on May 10, 2002. Over the span of their 19-year marriage, they had three boys—Josh, Jordan and Jacob—whom he loved with all his heart.
James wore many hats. He worked in carpentry, drove an off-road coal truck, worked in the coal mines and on drilling rigs.
James’s biggest love, outside of his family, was being a volunteer firefighter. James joined Pound Volunteer Fire Department on January 14, 2002, right after he and Susan started dating. James would do anything for anyone who he thought needed help. He was the first one to jump in and lend a hand. James had the biggest heart and never met a stranger.
To know James was to have a friend for life. He had the biggest smile and loved with everything he had.
James left this earth on September 12, 2021.”
Please take a moment to watch this truly moving memorial celebration to all of the firefighters that gave their lives so that others may live.
You will find the touching recognition of James Allen Sturgill roll call recognition at 1:52:30.
His family received a personalized badge with his name, a red rose, and an American Flag.
Let us remember his service to the citizens of the town of Pound and Wise County.
Thank you, James, for your service!
