If you've been following along on our Autumn dahlia tuber process, here is the info about storing them for the Winter. Everyone does things a little differently but this is how we've landed after much trial and error over the years (and is much more sustainable than plastic wrap!)

Tis the season for digging and storing your dahlia tubers! Well, in Denver, at least. Here is a quick snippet of how we do it on our tiny farm. We've had a few killing frosts now so your dahlias are likely turning black and definitely dunzo for the season like these were. First step - make sure you attach a label to the plant. We use flagging tape for support while they're growing and then I just take the same piece, label it, and tie it tightly to the main stalk just above the soil. Then we cut the plant down to about 18" and oh-so-carefully use a garden fork or pitchfork to lift the plant and clump of tubers out. The key here is to avoid cutting or breaking the tubers if you can. We then trim off all the long roots and pack them in crates with the soil still on (helps with moisture and preventing breakage) until it's time to clean and divide them. We will share more about the dividing process soon but in the meantime, what questions do you have about your dahlias?

Marvin's BFF, maybe.

My new favorite grass, Briza maxima. I see some fun crowns coming with this one!

Thanks to @crowmaggie73 for getting so many plants babies in the ground today! Teamwork makes the dream work 🤜🤛 The Rowdy Garden The Infinite Monkey Theorem is coming right along!

Flowers are in order every day, but especially for Mother's Day, right? And, who doesn't love a good hellebore? Especially these unique cultivars...I mean, how can you pass up a nearly black bloom? Or these ruffly picotee petals? Hellebores are also known as Lenten Roses and are one of the very first perennials to bloom each Spring, often coming up through the snow. They look delicate but they are extremely tough and can handle our Colorado winters like champs (pretty much a perfect mom metaphor, right?) To help you make things extra special, we've teamed up with a local artist to offer a limited number of these babies available for gifting to your favorite "mommas" (meaning, anyone who has "mothered" you that you want to celebrate) in an incredible package. For $150, you'll be able to gift: — A unique hellebore plant in a gorgeous vase that's perfect for arranging homegrown hellebore blooms next year. — A custom, original, unframed drawing (not a print!) of hellebores from Brandi (check out brandistanley.com). This ink + charcoal drawing will ensure Mom can enjoy her blooms year-round. — AND $25 of the sale will go directly to The Gathering Place to help fund their programs, which support all women-identifying folks and children experiencing poverty and homelessness. These limited offerings will be available to purchase in our online shop starting this Sunday 4/26 at 10am. And, only A FEW of the gorgeous dark varieties will be available, first-come, first-served. So, mark your calendars - Momma's Day is just over 2 weeks away! Local, contact-free pickup preferred but delivery can be arranged separately.
