To my daughter…How do I tell you that despite being my whole world, you will always
have to fight to prove that you belong, outside of my
own opinion.
The letters scramble in my head, running away from
any kind of structure because I don't want to ruin magic for you.

For me, you will always shine brighter than the moon
but once you leave my door, a whole new reality will
slowly reveal itself and I wish I could pretend for you
but I can't.
When do I open my lips to tell you how hard it is?
How hard it's been?
How it doesn't matter how special I think you are, the
worlds opinion of you is already ingrained into the history of who you've yet to become and life is not fair, that way.

And I know that in more ways than one your heart will
be broken like mine was, and it will shape who you are meant to be.
Fairytales will lead you down a road where you
believe that everything works out in the end but my
heart aches to tell you that's not always true no
matter how hard you wish it to be.
But little girl made of magic, I will try to illuminate the
way despite all of that. And as you grow up- a
woman, and Black- I will be there walking with you.

And I won't lie about the reality you were born into
but I will show you how to keep your light on through
the darkest days.

You will learn about your history before plantations
and slave ships and you'll be proud to know how the
truth of our past lights the way and how luminous
your future can be. As long as you don't give up, I will be there to guide
you with my words and by following my dreams. And
when words fail, we can paint hope in the sky and let
people laugh if they want.
And they can say we are too much but too much will
get you exactly what you need because you are
nothing less than that.
Little girl made of magic,
You will not fear this world but you will grow to
understand it. And it will make room for you, not the
other way around. And no matter what people say,
you will know your worth and how much you matter. I
cannot wait to see the magic you create and I will be
