While driving down Locust today I looked for Humpin Hanna's. I remember going there in the 70's. Well I couldn't find it, now I know why.

Humpin’ Hanna’s/O'Brads/East Village Other
827 E. Locust St.

Now nothing more than a grassy lot in Riverwest, 827 E. Locust St. was once home to the underground O’Brads and later Humpin’ Hanna’s (later simply Hanna’s), where you could catch the likes of Lou Reed, Spirit, Canned Heat and the MC5. Hanna’s was also a regular venue for the nascent Cheap Trick. In 1974, In A Hot Coma opened for Cheap Trick here, arguably providing the spark for Milwaukee’s punk rock scene. Believe it or not, Sunday was a Penny Beer Night, which, you’ll be unsurprised to hear, was very, very popular.

Urban Spelunking: MPS' Rufus King International High School 05/02/2019

I thought the pictures of this school were amazing.

Urban Spelunking: MPS' Rufus King International High School Milwaukee Public Schools is blessed with a number of really, really gorgeous old schoolhouses, but few can compete in the ornate category with Rufus King, which not only was built during the Great Depression, but really offered the ailing economy a giant middle finger with an almost insane attention...

How many South Siders remember Pinky's Bowl (1937-1989) on the corner of 27th and Oklahoma?

In 1937, Mr. Pinkalla added eight bowling lanes to a bar that had been well-known as a Prohibition-era speakeasy. According to legend, the previous owner had trained his dogs to "bushel up" when a revenue agent came into the bar. The dogs would jump into a bushel basket and hide the bar's liquor inventory by sleeping on top of it.

"This was the edge of town, Oklahoma Avenue," said Bob Pinkalla. "The city limits were right here. The hospital site was the city dump."

In 1960, a new 16-lane Pinky's was built over the original location. On April 20, 1960, an American Bowling Congress record was set at the bar with a 2404 series (267 average) for a three-man team.

The bar closed on May 15, 1989 and was razed for the expansion of Aurora St Luke's Medical Center. The Milwaukee Journal lamented, "We will miss Pinky's. And so will Milwaukee, a city trying to sell a new image but still a city where bowling shirts and not neckties may be the real uniform of allegiance."
