Nutrition: What You Eat Affects Your Teeth

Cheese, milk, plain yogurt, calcium-fortified tofu, leafy greens and almonds, are foods that may benefit tooth health thanks to their high amounts of calcium and other nutrients they provide. Protein-rich foods like meat, poultry, fish, milk and eggs are the best sources of phosphorus. Both of these minerals play a critical role in dental health, by protecting and rebuilding tooth enamel.

Fruits and vegetables are good choices for a healthy smile since they are high in water and fiber, which balance the sugars they contain and help to clean the teeth. These foods also help stimulate saliva production, which washes harmful acids and food particles away from teeth and helps neutralize acid, protecting teeth from decay. Plus, many contain vitamin C (important for healthy gums and quick healing of wounds) and vitamin A (another key nutrient in building tooth enamel).

Hands down, water—particularly fluoridated water—is the most tooth-friendly beverage.

5 Reasons to Schedule Your Dental Appointment Now

If you’ve been thinking about scheduling a dental appointment but have not gotten around to actually making the phone call, here are 5 great reasons to get yourself in gear!

1. Save money. Preventive care treatments are typically much less expensive than major restorative procedures (crowns, root canals, and dental implants).
2. Less discomfort. From gum disease to abscessed teeth, scheduling your appointment asap is the first step towards getting the problem resolved quickly.
3. Less time away from work or school. Being proactive and scheduling your dental appointment now will give you a chance to stay ahead of your dental problems and reduce the number of additional dental visits.
4. Fewer surprises and unexpected dental emergencies. Who wants to deal with a toothache during a vacation or in the middle of the night? While some dental problems are unforeseeable, most can be prevented or addressed before they have a chance to take you by surprise.
5. More convenient appointment time. Waiting until the last minute to schedule a dental appointment often means that you’ll have to settle for any appointment time that the dentist has available. This can be a problem if you are in need of a specific appointment time such as early mornings or Fridays.

If you live in and around Port St. Lucie and have not booked your visit with a local dentist, call us at (772) 344-7771 to reserve your appointment today.

Here are five useful tips to MAXIMIZE YOUR 2022 DENTAL BENEFITS

1. KEEP UP WITH PREVENTIVE CARE
Many dental insurance plans allow you to attend two cleanings and checkups each year at little to no out of pocket cost. Preventive appointments help your mouth feel clean & fresh and catch oral health problems before they become serious.

2. SCHEDULE RESTORATIVE TREATMENT ASAP
Dental insurance plans do not provide the same level of coverage for every treatment. While they offer robust coverage for preventive care, if things worsen major procedures might cover just 50%-80% of the cost.

3. REMEMBER THAT BENEFITS DO NOT ROLL OVER
Most insurance plans operate on a calendar-year basis. At the end of the year, unused benefits expire. Hence, if you know you need a specific treatment, the time to schedule it is now — before your 2022 policy ends.

4. BE STRATEGIC WITH MAJOR PROCEDURES
Some major dental procedures take place across multiple appointments. Ask your dental team if you can schedule it between 2022 and 2023. You might be able to use two annual maximums rather than just one.

5. UTILIZE YOUR FSA
If you have flexible spending account (FSA) through your employer. Most FSAs expires at the end of the calendar year. Use them before they expire.

Brushing and flossing your teeth, as well getting regular dental check-ups are important for excellent oral health, but did you know that your food can have an effect on your teeth and gums?

Here are vitamins to add to your diet for strong teeth and healthy gums:
• Vitamin C - maintains the health and strength of the connective tissues of your gums, which hold your teeth in place.
• Calcium - it builds the enamel, which is the protective outer covering of the teeth that protects them from cavities.
