Clarendon’s new AstroTurf opened
Project was supported by past pupils, parents
THE Clarendon Schools recently opened their new hockey AstroTurf which they are very happy about.
“A bronzed plaque emblazoned with the words, ‘A dream come true’ encapsulates the shared vision of the leaders of the three Clarendon Schools,” said Clarendon head of hockey Craig Giese.
Built on the original site of the main hockey field and adjacent to the existing supporters’ grandstand, the new AstroTurf stands proudly as the newest sporting facility of the Clarendon Schools.
Charné Jeacock, head of sport at Clarendon High, said there has been “great excitement hosting derby days and the astro has created a new atmosphere.
“All our hockey teams now get to practice on the turf. We have amazing parent support and are very grateful to the East London community for their support with regards to sponsorships,” she said.
Clarendon has a proud history of excellent hockey, equally supported by talented coaches, said Giese.
“This has ensured a number of successful results over many years. The addition of the turf will further enhance hockey standards at the Clarendon Schools,” he added.
The AstroTurf is a hybrid playing surface – a sand-base finish that can be watered by a state of the art irrigation system.
The surrounds include a carefully designed player-centric dugout with a fully equipped technical area for tournaments. The current grandstand has seating for approximately 150.
Plans for phase two of the project will see an extension of the grandstand with an upper level and supporters’ facility as well as upgrading of the ablution facilities.
“Supported by the three Clarendon Schools, parents and past pupils the facility was meticulously planned and our combined fund raising efforts ensured the success of the project,” added Jeacock.
The facility is earmarked for both regional and national tournaments in the next five years including the U13 All Girls’ Schools Sports Festival and the regional inter-provincial tournament.
It is managed by a very experienced committee which is responsible for all aspects of the facility.
