I was looking through my old stuff and I found a newspaper from my high school from February 13, 2004. I completely forgot I wrote this. I used to go by my middle name Michael in school. The idiotic editors did a bunch of typos on it which I corrected in pen. They apparently couldn’t read my handwriting In the submission I did to the newspaper, I think I wrote it on some binder paper and slipped it into the little submission boxes they had in all the English classrooms. I guess I’ve been an Oz fan for a longer time than I realized, I just never touched the sequel books until my 30s. This angsty teenage poem is about humanity being replaced by machines.

Updates:

The next page is still in the works. I think I need a short break though, life has been very busy lately, and I’ve been feeling a little burned out, artistically. On the bright side, my wife Deborah got herself a drawing tablet, and once we get the hang of it she will be able to help me do the pages, particularly once my son is in school, which will be soon. With two people working on it, it would be great to do three pages a week instead of two, but we’ll see. I just want to take some time to figure things out, and teach Deborah the ropes on the Comic Draw art program.

Set and Horus famously fought each other for the crown, which is why I thought The Emperor card worked for them. Although Set stands for constructive chaos, it still makes for a good order vs chaos metaphor, which is what the card embodies. To be honest, I like the card best inverted.

I drew the original for my webcomic Alcatraz High, decided to redraw it bigger and more detailed to use it on the next page. And since I like the design I’m sharing it as a separate artwork. Maybe I’ll design an entire tarot deck someday. I’m way too busy for that at the moment though.

I’m going to have to take a late credit on the next page. Halloween was busy, and yesterday was like a recuperation day. Been working on the page all day today though, but it’s always better to postpone a release than to release a sub-par page. It would be nice to have it done tomorrow but if it is it won’t be first thing in the morning. I’m no longer sick now, I’m fine but I’m still behind schedule from last week due to that illness.

A bonus image of Set in his sha animal form (aka Seth, Setesh, Sutekh). I decided to upload it by itself and put a papyrus background on it because I like how it turned out. I used a greyhound dog as a reference, along with my Set statue for the head. I don’t often draw four-legged creatures but I think it turned out well. The background is from an actual papyrus scroll that I own (seen on the cover image for Episode 1)

Set is mostly known for killing his brother Osiris and battling his nephew Horus for the throne, but he’s also known for protecting the Sun God Ra from the destructive Chaos Serpent every night, whose name I won’t repeat here lest I give it extra strength. Ancient Egyptian religion and philosophy was more about chaos vs order than good vs evil, hence calling Set “evil” is inaccurate. He represents constructive chaos; the forest fire that clears the way for new growth, for example. He also represents the Other, a patron for misfits and minorities. Before the Middle Kingdom, when Osiris worship became popular, he was seen as more benevolent.

The sha is a mythical creature in Egyptian mythology. There was one other God, Ash, an imported God from Libya, who had a sha form, who according to some sources may have been one of Set’s consorts, his only male one. I like to think the sha might have been real but has gone extinct, but that may be wishful thinking. I do think it is it’s own creature whether or not it was real, not a jackal or donkey or whatever, like some people say.

As for his true nature in my webcomic, we’ll have to wait and see. But there is method to his madness, that’s all I’ll say.
