Western Australian Debating League

WADL runs the largest high school debating competition in Western Australia, as well as other programs and activities.

The Western Australian Debating League aspires to ensure all students have meaningful access to debating that encourages critical thinking, fosters engagement with global issues, and equips students with lifelong skills. WADL is also responsible for selecting the West Australian State Debating Team which represents WA at the National Schools Debating Championships every year.

The WADL SDC Grand Final will be held on Monday, September 2nd, at Perth Town Hall. Doors open at 5:00pm, and the event will conclude at 9:40pm.

PLEASE NOTE that all teams need to arrive at least AN HOUR and FIFTEEN MINUTES earlier than their debate starts.

Division winners will also be announced for each age division at the end of their respective age divisions' Grand Finals. Division winners will be emailed to coordinators once they have been formalised. Coordinators should also keep an eye out for an email later in the week detailing the specifics of the Grand Final.

Light refreshments provided, with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.

WADL is proud to present our 2024 British Parliamentary competition! Register via the link in our bio.

Simply rock up with your partner at one of the above venues on these dates. You will be given a seminar on BP-style debating before diving right into 3 rounds of debates (with breaks of course!). It is a fun, low stress way to get into impromptu debating. We hope to see many of you there.

Special thanks to our host schools for graciously allowing us the use of their facilities.

Country Week was an immense blast! We are all very proud to see the kids improve in their technique and confidence throughout the week.

WADL will be running mini-carnivals in the South-West and Albany region in Term 3, complete with 4 weeks of online development modules. If you're a new school that have not been with us before and would like to register for the program, please contact the Chief Convener at [email protected]

We are very keen to see all these kids debate again!!

A fantastic run for our WA State Team at the National Schools Debating Championship! Winning 3 out of 7 in-rounds debates with some especially impressive performances, we debated against some of the best speakers in the country.

Special congratulations to Lachlan Blair for being selected as an Australian Team Reserve! 💛🖤💛🖤

We couldn’t be more proud of our State Team this year, and we can’t wait to see what they do next!

LAST CHANCE to register your school or team for WADL's 2024 Schools Debating Competition!

The SDC is a great opportunity for new debaters to learn how to debate, and for more experienced debaters to grow their skillset. All high school aged students in the greater Perth metropolitan area are welcome to compete.

Being an adjudicator with WADL is the perfect opportunity for all young adults. It is a low time commitment, completely suited to your availability, and you are reimbursed for your valuable time. Becoming an adjudicator will build many invaluable soft skills — including public speaking, critical thinking, leadership, and communication — while also providing unique opportunities, such as coaching at primary schools, travelling across the state, and the chance to volunteer on a committee.

Each year before the debating season, WADL hosts a training session for all new and experienced volunteers to qualify as adjudicators.
