Rediscover ED (the Eating Disorder) - an enemy, not a friend.

Photos from RediscoverE.D.'s post 08/02/2018

Thank you to everyone who came down to our booth at UTown yesterday to support us in raising awareness about eating disorders!

A big shout-out to BakeforMind and Foreword Coffee for partnering with us in this event and showcasing their awesome barista skills and bakes ☕🍪

We would also like to express our gratitude to Kelly, the research coordinator of SGH Eating Disorders Programme who kindly took time to come down and help shed light on eating disorders and the treatment programmes available at SGH. Most importantly, this would not have been possible without the kind support from SGH Department of Psychiatry, who kindly provided us with the brochures on eating disorders.

We hope that apart from redeeming the free bubble tea, those of you who came down to our booth yesterday had a chance to learn more about eating disorders and their impact on individuals and communities. If you or someone you know think you might be at risk of suffering from an eating disorder, please do not hesitate to reach out for help. You can contact the SGH eating disorders unit at [email protected], or seek help from a polyclinic or a GP.

In addition, we are currently looking for like-minded individuals who are passionate about our cause to join our team and be a part of organising similar events in the future! If you are interested to make a difference to eating disorder patients and advocacy work, please feel free to contact us via Facebook, Instagram or email at [email protected].

Once again, thank you for your support and have a good day! 🤗

My Eating Disorder Recovery Story Became a Viral "Humans of New York" Post 21/09/2017

"The world can be so full of love if we just invite it in by sharing our own vulnerability. .to share the weight of the pain until it no longer has the power to consume our lives."

My Eating Disorder Recovery Story Became a Viral "Humans of New York" Post As we walked into class, my friend looked up from her phone and delicately said, “It’s up.” I knew exactly what that meant. I ran to the back of a packed law school classroom and glued myself into a chair, gripping the sides of the seat in horror. All of Humans of New York’s 18 million followers wer...

'I Want More': Inside the Mind of Someone With Binge Eating Disorder 04/08/2017

Do we know enough about Binge Eating Disorder (BED)? It is often difficult for BED sufferers to seek help due to the intense feelings of shame and guilt associated with binge eating behaviours. Don't judge people who order too much at the restaurant. Don't look at someone as "disgusting" or having a "lack of self-discipline" based on how much they eat or weigh. Less judgment and more understanding is required before these silent sufferers can feel comfortable enough to seek help. As a society, it is important that we make it a point to treat everyone with kindness and less judgment because we know nothing about the demons people face.

The Painful Exhaustion of 'Hiding' My Eating Disorder 29/07/2017

The Painful Exhaustion of 'Hiding' My Eating Disorder "Many people with eating disorders are exhausted, mentally and physically."

A moment that changed me: a clump of hair falling out in the shower | Arwa Mahdawi 23/07/2017

"I’d suspected for a while that my hair was thinning. There had been a growing trail of evidence on my pillow, on the bathroom floor, on my clothes. But I’d never actually pulled a handful of my hair away from my scalp before. I remember feeling so sick in that instant that I almost threw up. Except, of course, I hadn’t eaten anything, so there was nothing to throw up. Holding a fistful of my hair, something inside me clicked. I realised what I’d done to myself and, for the first time since becoming sick, I actually wanted to get better."

Recovery from an eating disorder (ED) is never going to be easy; especially when the ED has become such an integral part of your life. Oftentimes patients cling on to the ED, because it is a safe space for them and has become such an effective coping mechanism. But is it really worth it? We all need to find our reasons and motivations to constantly pursue recovery. What is YOUR reason to recover?

A moment that changed me: a clump of hair falling out in the shower | Arwa Mahdawi For months I convinced myself I was fine, that I was in control of my fragile, bony body. Then, looking at the hair in my hand, something clicked

A psychiatrist reveals the ugly toll clean eating is having on young women 19/07/2017

"Pemberton also fails to believe that anyone subscribing to clean eating doesn’t suffer from some form of eating disorder, arguing that the lifestyle is synonymous with orthorexia – a term coined to describe a fixation on eating healthy foods.

Ultimately, it comes down to a matter of terminology, he explains, pointing out that the idea of seeing certain foods as clean and subsequently others as dirty, is an “inherently disordered way of viewing the world”."

A psychiatrist reveals the ugly toll clean eating is having on young women An eating disorder specialist has spoken out against the “toxic” effects of the clean eating movement. Dr Max Pemberton has written an open letter for The Daily Mail revealing the worrying rise in young women who are developing eating disorders as a result of following restrictive and supposedly ‘he...

Rediscovering Myself in Eating Disorder Recovery 13/07/2017

This is exactly why we came up with our name - RediscoverED. Because recovery is all about rediscovering new things: new truths about food, new truths about your value as a person, new mindsets, new attitudes, new lives, new you.

But one of the most important rediscovery and probably the precedent to all other rediscoveries is rediscovering that ED (the eating disorder) is not a friend, but an enemy. Thus our name RediscoverE.D., with a play on the word rediscovered. :)

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Actress Stephanie Beatriz on Battling Disordered Eating 10/07/2017

"I have an eating disorder. But like a lot of us, mine is a bit hard to define. I don’t purge, so I’m not a bulimic. I do eat, so I’m not anorexic. I’m what I like to call 'a disordered eater.' "
