The 2023 Industry Award was named in honor of Sandy Gunar of Avanti Talent Management. He was an industry judge for the 2020 Jersey City Comedy Festival which was streamed live on zoom. Sandy died from COVID and was also the beloved partner of Rich Kiamco the owner of The Laugh Tour Comedy Club. We remember him, his love for comedy and his wacky sense of humor through this award. The 2023 Sandy Gunar* Industry Award will be given to the BOF (Best Of The Fest) overall industry pick.

First time on a plane since…. I feel this disembodied drift. Nobody is wearing masks, like im in some PTSD grief timecapsule. Thinking of my beloved Sandy, its like “did covid deaths happen?” Am I the crazy person? I see a few people with masks, wonder if they lost their beloved, do they look around feeling odd? I feel like im wearing a purity ring on an in-flight o**y of raw mouths and nostrils.. Will see my parents, quality time before God forbid.. (Mom is getting forgetful… she forgot Sandy died from covid during our last facetime.. grief is weird nonlinear trapped door sometimes.. and i wanna see my mom (in their secure sterile WINDTUNNEL ventilated living-room) before she forgets me.. its a day at a time.

Gay tennis camp weekend 🏳️‍🌈🎾w im in heaven (muscle aches and all) great coaches, extremely great chef team, making amazing meals, (even vegan options) and everyone is so much fun, can’t wait for tonight’s festivities, which includes a lot of Broadway musical people, four-part, harmony, and foot rubs

Bittersweet Friendsgiving. Made a dish that Sandy and i grilled waay back on his deck in early pandemic, had tablecloth we used in 2019 with last full gathering in BEFORETIMES. Our other pod couple spent the afternoon with me, so grateful for the love and support…(and they did the dishes and clearing afterwardsOMG!) Made some really fun vegan foods based on recipes from Cinnamon Snail and the incredible Adam Sobel video classes… I did make my own pumpkin spice “Cinnamon Snail” knockoff variation, pumpkin infused cinnamon roll with cardamom, sugar-free allulose (so good so gooey so amazing… )
I made my first hazelnut herb encrusted tofu fillet!! it was so good I kept eating n eating
I’ve never had so many tofu fillets in one sitting, parsnip purée, miso glaze carrots, greens and lots of gratitude for my dear friends, and for everyone that reached out virtually to extend their love and warmth. Had good belly aching laughs and gutwrenching convulsive tears. I miss my beloved partner every day, i still chat w Sandy out loud, hold his pillow n cuddle. Its a process. Grief is a journey. Grateful for all the kindness along the way.

Somebody quoted me, I don’t even remember saying this, I was being interviewed a few weeks after my beloved Sandy had died, right as vaccines were beciming available to young people interviewed me and this person dm’d me this pic. it’s a beautiful quote.
I must’ve been in such a deep painful fog but it reads so clear, does feel inspiring… Perhaps this is Thanksgiving gift to myself from the universe

Rest in peace Chris Choi the partner of 32 years to my friend Eric..
My heart to Eric - eric was my first gay friend when i was 14. My lifeline out of my mean homophobic high school torture.
Chris and eric were one of my touchstone friends all these years, they met most every partner including Sandy my beloved just before he passed from covid during the early pandemic. As much as i want to take the last year and a half of grief, sadness and missing my beloved partner… and bestow some “grief pearls of wisdom”i have nothing , no magic potion to take away the profound sadness.
Its just being there, sitting with their loss. Sit with it with them, its just that vast painful unknown, and its his journey, his turn to go through this heart stabbing agony

Giddy about building my humble shoestring teeny Marquee for The Laugh Tour Comedy Club ! “Build it and they will come (laugh)” … im excited to create this homemade signage, literally lighting this gateway in to laughter for so many. Grateful for all the audiences that keep coming, all the comedians that have performed and the belly laughter shared by all. I wish so badly that my beloved was here in human form to share this milestone just a year and a half after his death- but I’m sure he is cheering me on from heaven - and sitting in the back of the room, siping a seltzer and eating a vegan kofta.. probably hanging in the last pearly gated row with … Hopeful for what’s to come next. Thankful in the midst of this pandemic, grief and loss to be able to create something rewarding with a great team of people so many talented comedians, and dedicated teams of volunteers and fans and friends supporting.
