Florida Down Under is a set of study abroad programs running to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji every summer from the University of Florida. This group exists to answer questions from potential students and connect future travelers with alums from the program. We have some posting to make up for now that we have service!
Days 13-15 we travelled to Tryconnell just near Mt. Mulligan to learn about the challenges living in remote Australia and the ecology of the dry forest. Not pictured was some epic star gazing, working on ethnography papers and great meals!

Day 13: moving on from our farmstays to Tryconnell. The students collected ethnographic data to write up a report on their experiences as it pertains to what we’ve been learning. Parents, we will be off the grid for the next couple of days but should have internet access in Cape Trip. Chat then!

Day 11: we sent our crew off with their farmstay families until Day 13… 🥲 We can’t wait to hear about their adventures and ethnography data collection!
Will post some pictures if we can prior to Tyrconnell where we will not have service!

Hidden Valley photo dump (days 7-10). We had lunch and a swim at Little Crystal Creek, did a guided rainforest walk with Ross, stopped at the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, learned about sustainable business in rural Australia, hiked the River Gorge, had our first group debate, hiked Wallaman Falls and learned about tourism development, had ice cream at Frosty Mango and spent a day at Mungalla station with the Nywaigi people where we were able to learn about their culture and long history in Australia. We also completed a beach cleanup service project.
We spent the night in Mission Beach and now we are headed to meet the farmstay families! Check in with you soon!

Day 5: We learned all about koalas from Dr. Julie Funnell with . This morning we were able to go out in the field to use the F***l Standing Crop Method. Left with a deep appreciation for the level of effort that goes into studies like these!

Day 3 Wrap Up:
Shakira Todd and Danii Yacoub took us on a beach scrub survey and showed us how to use camera traps. Also pictured is looking for green ants to lick and feeding parakeets.

Day 2 entailed a lecture by Mike Nicholas, a hike to the forts, a hike to Alma bay, 4 koala sightings, rock wallaby sightings (complete with a joey) and a stunning sunset! Now time for rest 😴
