"The Beat-Herder Festival has always been our favourite. As a festival, it’s unique, and that is illustrated by how we got involved in the first place.
As Utah Saints have just done the CBeebies Storytime for the first time last summer, have a seat, take 2 minutes out of your day and let us remember……
In 2007, when Beat-Herder had about 1000 people at the festival, one of the founders somehow got hold of our email and sent us a message. At the time, we (Utah Saints and Mooqee) were promoting our night, Sugarbeat in Leeds, which was doing well, Tim Utah was running the BombStrikes label with Mooqee (and they are still releasing music today) and Utah Saints were djing our own gigs.
The long message explained what Beat-Herder was about, how had been initially set up as a labour of love-free party a couple of years earlier, and how it’s main ambition was that everyone who came had a brilliant time. The organisers and volunteers built everything themselves, and the setting was in a wood, in the middle of a field near Skipton.
That all sounded great, and if it had been when we were starting out, in 1991 (!) then we would have probably just rocked up and played, but this was 2007 and we had families to support…..
So there was an offer of some money, about half of what we would normally get, and as we read on, the email explained that there was no more money in the pot, but if the offer wasn’t enough, they had a car that they could sell.
And that was it – we don’t want anyone to have to sell their car to pay us, but the fact that it was mentioned at all started our love affair with this great event.
So we took half our normal fee, no one sold their car, and we DJed in The Woods in 2007 – everything was brilliant – soundsystem made your clothes move, the lights made the space feel indoors and outdoors at the same time, and the trees made you feel like you were away from everything. It also revigorated Utah Saints’ karma, as the next year Utahs had the biggest hit of our career with the track Something Good 08….
Afterwards, we spoke to the organisers, said that we booked a lot of DJs and could maybe help a little…. We were then honoured with booking the DJs for the woods on Fridays for a few years. We’ve always tried to be eclectic, booking everyone from Swing Dance to Drum and Bass via everything else, so when The Ring (real name Pratty’s Ring) was built from the largest stones that could be transported by mega truck, we were beyond excited to be asked to programme the stage for the whole weekend…..
And that is now our home from home every year, and we are very lucky and privileged to have been involved with such a legendary event as Beat-Herder.

As we tell everyone, the festival has soul from the top down. Every detail of the festival has been taken care of by at least one of the organisers, they really care – about the music, the sound, the art, the space, the land, the food, the people who are working, and above all, they care that everyone who comes has a brilliant time.

So, whether this is your first visit or your fifteenth, have an amazing time and remember that you are part of Beat-Herder history too. :)"
