Harley, The Throwaway Puppy

Harley, The Throwaway Puppy

The true stories of Harley and Mo, champion agility dogs. I donate all the proceeds from my books a All of my proceeds are donated to animal rescue charities.

A mixed-breed dog who began her life in a shelter, Harley became a champion in dog agility through the love of her adoptive family. Harley, The Throwaway Puppy, lovingly follows her from shelter to her first competition. Mo: A Throwaway Puppy Story and A Harley Christmas are also books in the Harley series. Please note that all photos and images are copyrighted and cannot be used or reproduced without permission.

It is with great sadness that Harley’s family announces that their champion passed away last week at age 15. In the last few months, her health and vitality had substantially declined. In her memory, this FB Page will continue to mark her legacy.

With her gentle nature, keen intelligence, and extreme athleticism, Harley, with her teammates James and Kristen, rose through the ranks of American Kennel Club agility competitions. Upon her retirement a few years ago, she had garnered the top AKC agility titles, the Master Agility Champion and the Preferred Agility Champion, along with many qualifying titles and ribbons. She was one of the first mixed breed dogs to compete with purebreds equally, at last, in agility.

But what Harley didn’t know, despite her occasional personal appearance at a book signing or dog fair, was that she had thousands of fans, most of whom had never seen her except through books and video. Her remarkable spirit and life story inspired me to write and illustrate books for children, who might then see hope for themselves in what she had accomplished.

Each year, except for the present one, I would read Harley’s life story to hundreds of school children. They reacted with cheers and applause as Harley overcame both literal and physical obstacles in her life. They asked countless questions about what she was like, what her favorite food was, what she liked about agility. When Mo joined Harley’s family, he also had a book, and the children would wonder at Harley’s love for little Mo. It was always my hope that the children would find courage and hope in Harley’s stories, for she showed us the best of what one can be: gentle, loving, strong, and smart.

Harley didn’t get this way on her own, however. Her family chose her when everyone else had ignored the older puppy at the animal rescue. They taught her to channel her excess energy into a sport that also engaged her mind. The love and patience they showed to Harley reflected into her life. When babies came into the family, Harley would kiss them tenderly and patiently watch them grow up, even as she grew older. Even when a fragile kitten was rescued from outside, Harley stepped up as a temporary foster mom, allowing the kitten to snuggle and keep warm.

We mourn with James, Kristen, and their two little boys at the loss of such a dog. Dogs are given to us for a short while, but in that time, they fill our hearts — and sometimes even inspire us. Good girl, Harley. Rest well.

Harley and Mo and their family are hunkered down here in NC, just as almost all of you are. We wish you good health as you practice the precautions that seem to change daily. If you could look into Harley's big brown eyes, you would see the love and peace there, and she would ask (if she could speak!), for you to take a deep breath and a delightful nap. Stay well, Harley and Mo Fans. We love you.

This is lovely Zero, the 2017 Top Dog winner from Charlotte/Mecklenburg NC's Bark in the Park Festival last year. Ordinarily, Zero's portrait (by me!) would be on all the t-shirts sold at the 2018 Festival, but sadly Bark in the Park is not being held this year. So, PLEASE give poor Zero the love and attention he deserves by Liking, Commenting, or Sharing! -- Elisabeth, author/artist

I loved sharing Harley and Mo's books with Blythe Elementary's 180 first graders! Yesterday, I read the stories and we talked about hope, love, and working hard. Thanks, Blythe!
