This week on our Saturday Showcase, we want to take a look at Samuels two oldest sons, Joel and Abijah. As Samuel got older, he appointed these two sons to be judges over Israel, and taking some of the workload off of him. The problem was that Samuels sons were not the same as their father. Samuel loved God, his sons loved money and would take bribes and pay offs, making that justice system a fake.
The elders of Israel finally met with Samuel to tell him that his sons were not doing a good job, and instead of appointing another judge to replace Samuel, just anoint a king. All the countries around them had kings.
Neither Samuel nor God wanted Israel to be ruled by a king whom they would follow instead of God. But God told Samuel to warn them what it would be like with a king, and if they still wanted one, give them a king. Samuel tried to tell the Israel leaders how a king would treat them, but they would not back down, they still demanded a king.
Because Joel and Abijah were more concerned with money and themselves, they were the cause of taking down Gods earthly law of honest fair judges ruling over disputes and keeping laws, and replace the law system with a King who would make his own laws and judgements to benefit himself.
We learn from this story of these two sons of Samuel, how we treat others reflect on our character and how the love of money comes between a person and God.
You can read this story in 1 Samuel Chapter 8
