Castle Rock Chardonnay Central Coast 2021 (85, $10)
This inexpensive wine was the most cheese-friendly of the lot. It balanced appropriate amounts of toasty oak notes, underlying citrus and stone fruit flavors and pleasant acidity to play off analogous traits in its cheese partners. Both the Laura Chenel chèvre, with its prominent goatiness balanced by sweet and tart notes, and the funky Nicasio Square, a full-flavored New World Taleggio-style, immediately brought out a sharp, spicy quality in the wine, which quite quickly mellowed to a harmonious partnership. The Cornelia, another washed-rind, moderately funky number from Point Reyes Farmstead via Murray’s Caves, and the Fiscalini Old World Aged Cheddar—complex, fruity, meaty and full of umami—also found harmony.
