We recently received a Harmony guitar from a long-time friend and client for some adjustments. Upon inspection, we noticed the neck relief was too straight, causing an uneven string height too high on the bass side and too low on the treble. This imbalance was affecting the sound, and the high string height at the nut made pressing an F bar chord difficult.

We also discovered that the existing shim under the saddle was made of plastic, which can dampen vibration transfer, so we replaced it with a wooden shim for better resonance.

To resolve the issues, we adjusted the neck relief, lowered the saddle to the ideal height, and individually slotted the strings at the nut for easier playability. We also cleaned up the fingerboard and tightened the machine heads.

Now, it's all set and ready to rock!

Adred sent in his acoustic guitar with a preamp issue—power light on, but no sound. Upon inspection, we found the preamp PCB was damaged beyond repair. We recommended a replacement, which solved the problem. Additionally, we noticed the guitar’s saddle wasn’t flat, causing poor sound transfer. We’ve fixed that too!

Ashton brought in his Ibanez guitar for an upgrade, swapping out the stock pickups for Bare Knuckle True Grit pickups in the neck and bridge, along with a Bare Knuckle Crawler in the bridge position.

This setup, using the Ibanez 3SWLDMX9 5-way switch, is quite advanced. When changing pickups, understanding the polarity, start and end pole wiring is crucial; otherwise, you risk phase issues or incorrect wiring configurations.

When Ashton dropped off the guitar, he mentioned that he had been dealing with a lot of string buzzing due to low string action. I assured him that with the right adjustments—proper neck relief, string height, and neck angle—it’s absolutely possible to achieve low action without the buzz on a well-crafted guitar.

We’ve meticulously hand-crafted a bone nut from top-quality black bone sourced from Stewart-MacDonald USA. Shaping a nut from blank bone is a complex task that demands exceptional patience and precision, which is why it comes at a premium. A customer recently sent us a Taylor guitar that didn’t quite sound like a Taylor should. After inspecting it, we discovered a few issues: the neck relief was too straight, the saddle on the treble side as well as the bass-side were also too low. This led to compromised bass and treble. Additionally, the bottom of the saddle wasn't flat, resulting in only 40% contact, which negatively impacted the guitar's overall volume and tone. Sam approached us with frustration, reporting that his Taylor guitar's plugged-in sound was intermittently cutting out during worship sessions. He suspected that the LR Baggs Anthem, installed by another technician, might be the culprit. After testing the instrument ourselves and strumming a few chords, we concluded that the issue stemmed from the installation setup rather than any fault with the LR Baggs Anthem itself.

Sam agreed to proceed with a thorough setup with us. As anticipated, upon examination, we found that a partial wood shim had been used to raise the bass string height, which was a subpar solution. Additionally, the saddle had not been sanded to perfect straightness. These two factors were significantly dampening the guitar's plugged-in acoustic sound.
