Maybe your eye is drawn to the bright white spot. Then you notice the spot is at the back end of a brown shield. Suddenly, you realize this must be a lone star tick. But it is massive, full of blood, more than 100x its unfed weight. Correct tick ID starts with focusing on the scutum. https://bit.ly/TickID_Guide

Ticks change appearance as they feed (https://bit.ly/tick_growth). That can make it hard to know what kind of tick it is. And for many types of tick-transmitted germs, risk for disease increases the longer ticks are attached. It’s about the INFECTIOUS DOSE; because of the long feeding time of ticks, the germs don’t all go in at once. YES, some diseases have lower infectious doses, and YES, some people may be more susceptible. But science studies clearly show risk for infection increases with duration of tick attachment (https://bit.ly/timetotransmission).
