First it was killer bees, then murder hornets , now this. Don't worry LifeSpace Nation , it's just more sensationalism. These Joro spiders don't actually fly, they parachute from heights. Not a threat to humans (other than our psyche!)

Carpenter ants, including swarmers, indicating a mature colony. They do not eat wood like termites but hollow it out to make nests.

This was shot today on Scraggy Neck in Bourne just prior to being treated.

Maybe your eye is drawn to the bright white spot. Then you notice the spot is at the back end of a brown shield. Suddenly, you realize this must be a lone star tick. But it is massive, full of blood, more than 100x its unfed weight. Correct tick ID starts with focusing on the scutum. https://bit.ly/TickID_Guide

Risk of disease transmission increases the longer a tick is feeding. And different types of ticks transmit different germs, and have large differences in infection rates, too. can quickly help guide decisions about tick testing (https://bit.ly/Tick_Two_Step) and likely disease risk.

Based on the number of recent TickSpotters submissions, and some of the photos, it seems now would be a great time to review best practices for doing your daily tick check. https://bit.ly/tickcheck1. And if you do find a tick, don’t forget to take a pic and send it to .

Ticks change appearance as they feed (https://bit.ly/tick_growth). That can make it hard to know what kind of tick it is. And for many types of tick-transmitted germs, risk for disease increases the longer ticks are attached. It’s about the INFECTIOUS DOSE; because of the long feeding time of ticks, the germs don’t all go in at once. YES, some diseases have lower infectious doses, and YES, some people may be more susceptible. But science studies clearly show risk for infection increases with duration of tick attachment (https://bit.ly/timetotransmission).
