Happy New Egyptian Year 6266* and a blessed Coptic Year 1741* to all Egyptians around the world—whether you were born in Egypt, lived there, grew up, studied or worked in Egypt, visited Egypt, or simply love and admire its rich heritage!

Egyptian Year (Calendar):
The ancient Egyptian calendar was a solar calendar with a 365-day year, divided into three seasons of 120 days each, plus an intercalary month of five epagomenal days. Each season had four months of 30 days, with the months initially numbered within each season and later named after their principal festivals. The New Year was celebrated on September 11, marking the rise of the Dog Star, Sirius, which heralded the flooding of the Nile and the new planting season.

Coptic Calendar:
The Coptic calendar, also known as the "Martyrs' Calendar" or the Alexandrian calendar, is a liturgical calendar used by the Coptic Orthodox Church and its members. It continues the ancient Egyptian calendar tradition and was used for fiscal purposes in Egypt until the Gregorian calendar was adopted on September 11, 1875. The Coptic calendar is one of the oldest continuously used calendar (If not the oldest of all) systems, with origins tracing back to the 5th millennium BCE.

Nayrouz (Neyrouz):
Nayrouz marks the feast of millions of martyrs and confessors commemorated by the Coptic Orthodox Church. Celebrated on September 11, it is both the start of the Coptic New Year and the first month, Thout. The Feast of Nayrouz signifies the beginning of the Coptic year. The calendar marks its starting point with the ascension of the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the year 284 to commemorate the severe persecution and the significant number of martyrs killed during his era. This choice reflects the immense suffering endured by early Christians and serves as a lasting reminder of their faith and resilience in the face of adversity.

Wishing everyone a joyful and prosperous year ahead!
