The beautiful town of Satpuli is situated at an elevation of 657 mtrs above the sea level, en route to Pauri and an idle place for angling and fishing. Being a midpoint between Kotdwar (54 Kms.) & Pauri (52 Kms.), it was the ideal midway break point and is famous for ‘Maachi Bhaat’ (meaning Fish curry) because of the staple food that used to served here during lunch by the road side eatery. राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग ११९ पर कोटद्वार-पौड़ी के मध्य कोटद्वार से लगभग ५४ कि०मी० तथा पौड़ी से ५२ कि०मी० की दूरी पर स्थित है सतपुली। समुद्र तल से ६५७ मीटर की ऊंचाई पर पूर्वी नयार नदी के किनारे स्थित यह छोटा सा पर्वतीय नगर है। नयार नदी को पुराणों में "नावालिका" के नाम से जाना गया है। मान्यता है कि कोटद्वार से इस स्थान तक मार्ग में सात पुल होने के कारण इस स्थान का नाम सतपुली पड़ा। सतपुली मुख्य राजमार्ग पर स्थित है तथा इस क्षेत्र के अन्य बाजारों तथा ग्रामों की अपेक्षाकृत सबसे अधिक विकसित बाजार है अत: यहां से गुजरने वाले सभी वाहन यहां रूकते हैं और यहां यात्रियों हेतु जलपान-भोजन आदि की व्यवस्था हेतु कई छोटे होटल, रेस्टोरेन्ट तथा दुकानें हैं। सतपुली का परिचय वर्ष १९५२ में हुई एक बड़ी तथा हृदय विदारक घटना का वर्णन के बिना सदैव अधूरा सा लगता है। वर्ष १९५२ तक सतपुली अपने बड़े-बड़े खेती योग्य खेतों तथा नदी के किनारे स्थित कुछ छोटी-छोटी झोपड़ीनुमा दुकानों के लिया जाना जाता था। वर्ष १९५२ के वर्षाकाल के समय एक रात नयार नदी में भयानक बाढ़ आई जो अपने साथ नदी किनारे खड़ी जी०एम०ओ०यू० लिमिटेड की बसें उनमें सो रहे कई चालक-परिचालक तथा क्लीनर साथ ही साथ सतपुली बाजार की दुकानें सब बहा ले गई। स्थानीय निवासियों, दुकानदारों ने प्रयास कर सतपुली बाजार को पुन: बसाया तथा जल्दी ही सतपुली एक बार फिर से आबाद हो गया। बाद में स्थानीय निवासियो-व्यापरियों ने मिलकर इस त्रासदी में मारे गये लोगों की याद में सतपुली में बिजलीघर के पास एक शहीद स्मारक का निर्माण किया जिसमें मारे गये लोगों के नाम अकिंत हैं।
